Abstract
As you may have already noted, this year introduces a new set of authors for this fundamental review. As new authors, they hope that they can do as accurate a job as did their predecessor, Professor Earl Wehry, of the University of Tennessee. The format for this review follows the basic outline used by Professor Wehry, with some modifications. They have condensed several sections and eliminated the section on gas-phase chemiluminescence. The primary areas of emphasis including advances in experimental techniques, developments in instrumentation, and applications for chemical analysis, remain the same. To keep the review at a reasonable length, they have not included articles that are only peripherally related to analytical chemistry or those that represent straightforward extensions or demonstrations of previously published research. In this first issue, it is likely that they have made some errors of omission, and they request your assistance in identifying any obvious errors. They have tried to be conscientious in surveying the literature and have also surveyed individual researchers in the field. This review covers literature indexed by Chemical Abstracts from January, 1985, Vol. 102, issue 1, through October 1987, Vol. 107, issue 16. Accordingly, there will be some overlap between this reviewmore » and Professor Wehry's last review.« less

Optical explosives detection: from color changes to fluorescence turn-on

TL;DR: This tutorial review discusses chemical approaches to sensing explosives based on an optical readout, and summarizes recent advances in fluorescence strategies, including fluorescence turn-on, of interest to researchers working in the areas of materials chemistry or forensics.
Journal ArticleDOI

Integrating advanced functionality in a microfabricated high-throughput fluorescent-activated cell sorter

TL;DR: This study presents a new pressure-driven microfabricated fluorescent-activated cell sorter chip with advanced functional integration, and develops a monolithically integrated single step coaxial flow compound for hydrodynamic focusing of samples in flow cytometry and cell sorting.
Journal ArticleDOI

Dissolved organic fluorophores in southeastern US coastal waters: correction method for eliminating Rayleigh and Raman scattering peaks in excitation–emission matrices

TL;DR: In this article, a method for eliminating Rayleigh and Raman scatter peaks from EEMs during post-processing of the data in MATLAB® was developed to excise scatter peaks (i.e. peak emission±10−15 nm at each excitation wavelength) from the scan data and replace the excised values using three-dimensional interpolation of the remaining data (Delaunay triangulation method).

Biological detection by optical oxygen sensing

TL;DR: For these systems, which enable a range of new bioanalytical tasks with different samples and models in a minimally invasive, contact-less manner, with high sensitivity, flexibility and imaging capabilities in 2D and 3D, relevant practical examples are presented and their merits and limitations discussed.

Nile red: a selective fluorescent stain for intracellular lipid droplets.

TL;DR: The dye nile red, 9-diethylamino-5H- benzo[alpha]phenoxazine-5-one, is an excellent vital stain for the detection of intracellular lipid droplets by fluorescence microscopy and flow cytofluorometry and it exhibits properties of a near-ideal lysochrome.

Fluorescence quenching method for determining equilibrium constants for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons binding to dissolved humic materials

TL;DR: In this paper, a fluorescence quenching method was developed for determining equilibrium constants for the association of pyrene, phenanthrene, and anthracene with dissolved humic and fulvic acids.

Synchronized Excitation of Fluorescence Emission Spectra

J. B. F. Lloyd
- 17 May 1971 -
TL;DR: In this article, the fluorescence emission of complex mixtures of fluorescent compounds sometimes cannot be satisfactorily resolved by the usual technique of excitation at various fixed wavelengths selected specifically for individual components.
Journal ArticleDOI

Bioluminescence and chemiluminescence

TL;DR: Evidence is developing for interesting interand intra-phyletic similarities, especially in the structure of luciferins and the chemiluminescent reaction mechanisms.
