TLDR
In this paper, a method has been developed for quantitative measurement of vegetation conditions over broad regions using ERTS-1 spectral bands 5 and 7, corrected for sun angle, which is shown to be correlated with aboveground green biomass on rangelands.
Abstract
The Great Plains Corridor rangeland project utilizes natural vegetation systems as phenological indicators of seasonal development and climatic effects upon regional growth conditions. A method has been developed for quantitative measurement of vegetation conditions over broad regions using ERTS-1 MSS data. Radiance values recorded in ERTS-1 spectral bands 5 and 7, corrected for sun angle, are used to compute a band ratio parameter which is shown to be correlated with aboveground green biomass on rangelands.

Detecting Himalayan glacial lake outburst floods from Landsat time series

TL;DR: In this paper, a Random Forest classifier was used to generate fuzzy land cover maps for 2491 images, achieving overall accuracies of 91% and a likelihood-based change point technique to estimate the timing of glacial lake outburst floods at the pixel scale.

Evaluating an active optical sensor for quantifying and mapping green herbage mass and growth in a perennial grass pasture

TL;DR: This study explores the application of an active, near infrared and red reflectance sensor to quantify and map pasture herbage mass using a range of derived spectral indices and found the Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index offered the best correlation with green dry matter.

Evaluation of linear spectral unmixing and ΔNBR for predicting post-fire recovery in a North American ponderosa pine forest

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors presented a preliminary comparison of immediate post-fire char fraction, as measured by linear spectral unmixing, and ΔNBR, with two quantitative one-year post fire field measures indicative of canopy and sub-canopy conditions: % live tree and dry organic litter weight (gm-2).

Estimation of surface chlorophyll‐a on an emersed mudflat using field spectrometry: accuracy of ratios and derivative‐based approaches

TL;DR: In this article, the accuracy of spectral indices and derivative-based approaches for quantifying chlorophyll on emersed intertidal sediments is explored, including derivative reflectance at individual wavelengths, the wavelength position of the red-edge inflection point (REIP), and the area under the derivative curve.
