The Great Plains Corridor rangeland project utilizes natural vegetation systems as phenological indicators of seasonal development and climatic effects upon regional growth conditions. A method has been developed for quantitative measurement of vegetation conditions over broad regions using ERTS-1 MSS data. Radiance values recorded in ERTS-1 spectral bands 5 and 7, corrected for sun angle, are used to compute a band ratio parameter which is shown to be correlated with aboveground green biomass on rangelands.read more

Evaluating the best spectral indices for the detection of burn scars at several post-fire dates in a mountainous region of northwest Yunnan, China.
TL;DR: Analysis of burn scar detection capabilities of 11 widely used spectral indices at 1 to 5 years after fire events in four dominant vegetation groups in a mountainous region of northwest Yunnan, China shows that Normalized Burn Ratio and Normalized Difference Moisture Index are always among the three best performers for the detection of burn scars but not for the immediate post-fire assessment.

ASTER and Landsat ETM+ images applied to sugarcane yield forecast
TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a method to support sugarcane yield forecast using vegetation spectral indices, principal component analysis and historic yield data, which comprises several steps: enhancement of specific spectral responses of vegetation constituents; reduction of spectral dimensions with prioritization of information and weighing of parameters related to foliar area; the data processed through these steps are reduced to a single image (the synthesis image), from which the mean DN (digital number) per cultivated area is calculated.
