GMT allows users to manipulate (x,y,z) data, and generate PostScript illustrations, including simple x-y diagrams, contour maps, color images, and artificially illuminated, perspective, and/or shaded-relief plots using a variety of map projections.
Abstract
Version 31 of the Generic Mapping Tools (GMT) has been released More than 6000 scientists worldwide are currently using this free, public domain collection of UNIX tools that contains programs serving a variety of research functions GMT allows users to manipulate (x,y) and (x,y,z) data, and generate PostScript illustrations, including simple x-y diagrams, contour maps, color images, and artificially illuminated, perspective, and/or shaded-relief plots using a variety of map projections (see Wessel and Smith [1991] and Wessel and Smith [1995], for details) GMT has been installed under UNIX on most types of workstations and both IBM-compatible and Macintosh personal computers

Detailed crustal deformation and fault rupture of the 2015 Gorkha earthquake, Nepal, revealed from ScanSAR-based interferograms of ALOS-2

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors detected widely distributed ground displacements for the 2015 Gorkha earthquake by applying a ScanSAR-based interferometry analysis of Advanced Land Observing Satellite 2 (ALOS-2) L-band data.

Three-dimensional crustal structure of Long Valley caldera, California, and evidence for the migration of CO2 under Mammoth Mountain

TL;DR: In this article, a tomographic inversion for crustal structure was performed for a 28 km × 16 km area encompassing part of the resurgent dome, the south moat, and Mammoth Mountain.

Structure of North American mantle constrained by simultaneous inversion of multiple‐frequency SH, SS, and Love waves

TL;DR: In this article, the velocity and attenuation structure of the North American mantle from a mixed data set was simultaneously invert for the velocity structure of a lower mantle plume, which was observed to originate at about 1500 km depth beneath the Yellowstone area, tilting about 40° from vertical.

Source process and near-source ground motions of the 2005 West Off Fukuoka Prefecture earthquake

TL;DR: In this article, a large shallow crustal earthquake occurred at the western off-shore of Fukuoka Prefecture, northern Kyushu, Japan at 10:53 on March 20, 2005 (JST).

Present‐day crustal thinning in the southern and northern Tibetan Plateau revealed by GPS measurements

TL;DR: GPS measurements from sites within the Tibetan Plateau show not only east-southeast-west-northwest extension but also, more importantly, horizontal dilation throughout the interior of the plateau.

Free software helps map and display data

TL;DR: The Generic Mapping Tools (GMT) is introduced, which is a free, public domain software package that can be used to manipulate columns of tabular data, time series, and gridded data sets and to display these data in a variety of forms ranging from simple x-y plots to maps and color, perspective, and shaded-relief illustrations.
