GMT allows users to manipulate (x,y,z) data, and generate PostScript illustrations, including simple x-y diagrams, contour maps, color images, and artificially illuminated, perspective, and/or shaded-relief plots using a variety of map projections.
Abstract
Version 31 of the Generic Mapping Tools (GMT) has been released More than 6000 scientists worldwide are currently using this free, public domain collection of UNIX tools that contains programs serving a variety of research functions GMT allows users to manipulate (x,y) and (x,y,z) data, and generate PostScript illustrations, including simple x-y diagrams, contour maps, color images, and artificially illuminated, perspective, and/or shaded-relief plots using a variety of map projections (see Wessel and Smith [1991] and Wessel and Smith [1995], for details) GMT has been installed under UNIX on most types of workstations and both IBM-compatible and Macintosh personal computers

Deformation during the 1975-1984 Krafla rifting crisis, NE Iceland, measured from historical optical imagery

TL;DR: In this article, the authors measured the displacement field resulting from the 1975-1984 Krafla rifting crisis, NE Iceland, using optical image correlation images are processed using the COSI-Corr software package.

The 2007–8 volcanic eruption on Jebel at Tair island (Red Sea) observed by satellite radar and optical images

TL;DR: In this paper, high-resolution optical images and interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) data were used to study the September 2007-January 2008 Jebel at Tair eruption, revealing several fresh ground fissures, a new scoria cone near the summit, and that 5.9 ± 0.1 km2 of new lava covered about half of the island.

Magma degassing triggered by static decompression at Kīlauea Volcano, Hawai‘i

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose that SO2 release was triggered by static decompression caused by the withdrawal of magma from Kīlauea's shallow summit reservoir, which is sufficient to trigger exsolution of the observed excess SO2 from a relatively small volume of the magma at the source depth.

Electrical conductivity beneath the Bolivian Orocline and its relation to subduction processes at the South American continental margin

TL;DR: In this paper, a long-period magnetotelluric data set was obtained during 2002 and 2004 in the central Andes to study the deep electrical conductivity structure in the region of the Bolivian Orocline between latitudes 17°S and 19°S.

A new technique to sense non-Gaussian features of the sea surface from L-band bi-static GNSS reflections

TL;DR: This is the first time that GNSS-reflections have sensed and identified the up- and down-wind signature on the surface, putting and end to the 180° ambiguity that was usually attributed to GNSS observations of directional roughness.

Free software helps map and display data

TL;DR: The Generic Mapping Tools (GMT) is introduced, which is a free, public domain software package that can be used to manipulate columns of tabular data, time series, and gridded data sets and to display these data in a variety of forms ranging from simple x-y plots to maps and color, perspective, and shaded-relief illustrations.
