GMT allows users to manipulate (x,y,z) data, and generate PostScript illustrations, including simple x-y diagrams, contour maps, color images, and artificially illuminated, perspective, and/or shaded-relief plots using a variety of map projections.
Abstract
Version 31 of the Generic Mapping Tools (GMT) has been released More than 6000 scientists worldwide are currently using this free, public domain collection of UNIX tools that contains programs serving a variety of research functions GMT allows users to manipulate (x,y) and (x,y,z) data, and generate PostScript illustrations, including simple x-y diagrams, contour maps, color images, and artificially illuminated, perspective, and/or shaded-relief plots using a variety of map projections (see Wessel and Smith [1991] and Wessel and Smith [1995], for details) GMT has been installed under UNIX on most types of workstations and both IBM-compatible and Macintosh personal computers

Complex evolution of paleolacustrine systems on Mars: An example from the Holden crater

TL;DR: The Holden area was subjected to a “wet” lacustrine phase of Hesperian age and an “icy” phase during the Amazonian.

Seismic anisotropy and heterogeneity in the Alaska subduction zone

TL;DR: In this article, the authors determined P- and S-wave tomography and P-wave anisotropic structure of the Alaska subduction zone using 259 283 P and 73 817 Swave arrival times from 7268 local shallow and intermediate-depth earthquakes recorded by more than 400 seismic stations.

Crust–mantle boundaries in the Taiwan–Luzon arc-continent collision system determined from local earthquake tomography and 1D models: Implications for the mode of subduction polarity reversal

TL;DR: In this article, Wu et al. mapped the Taiwan-Luzon arc-continent collision zone using local earthquake tomography and identified three Moho discontinuities and the plate interface that juxtaposes Eurasian lower crust against mantle lithosphere of the Philippine Sea plate.

Generation mechanism of slow earthquakes: Numerical analysis based on a dynamic model with brittle‐ductile mixed fault heterogeneity

TL;DR: In this paper, a dynamic model consisting of a cluster of frictionally unstable patches on a stable background was proposed to model slow earthquakes, where the controlling parameters were related to the patch distribution and the viscosity of both the patches and the background.

Free software helps map and display data

TL;DR: The Generic Mapping Tools (GMT) is introduced, which is a free, public domain software package that can be used to manipulate columns of tabular data, time series, and gridded data sets and to display these data in a variety of forms ranging from simple x-y plots to maps and color, perspective, and shaded-relief illustrations.
