Abstract
This article provides an extensive overview of the recent literature on student evaluation of teaching (SET) in higher education. The review is based on the SET meta-validation model, drawing upon research reports published in peer-reviewed journals since 2000. Through the lens of validity, we consider both the more traditional research themes in the field of SET (i.e., the dimensionality debate, the ‘bias’ question, and questionnaire design) and some recent trends in SET research, such as online SET and bias investigations into additional teacher personal characteristics. The review provides a clear idea of the state of the art with regard to research on SET, thus allowing researchers to formulate suggestions for future research. It is argued that SET remains a current yet delicate topic in higher education, as well as in education research. Many stakeholders are not convinced of the usefulness and validity of SET for both formative and summative purposes. Research on SET has thus far failed to provide c...

Evaluating Engagement Online

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors found that female instructors are penalized with harsh evaluations when they violate gender prescriptions to be nurturing and helpful, while male instructors are not penalized for being nurturing or helpful.

To Get Good Student Ratings should you only Teach Programming Courses? Investigation and Implications of Student Evaluations of Teaching in a Software Engineering Context

TL;DR: In this article, student evaluations of teaching (SET) are commonly used in universities for assessing teaching quality, and the authors investigate how the topic of a software engineering course affects the SET metrics.

Gender-biased evaluation or actual differences? Fairness in the evaluation of faculty teaching.

TL;DR: This article used differential item functioning (DIF) analysis to examine whether the meaning of an item changes depending on the gender of the instructor and found that four of the eight items in the rating scale were easier for women than men with similar teaching ability.

Utility of Feedback Given by Students During Courses

TL;DR: This two-article dissertation summarizes the end-of-course survey and formative feedback literatures, as well as proposes actionability as a useful construct in the analysis of feedback from students captured in real-time during their courses.

Deleuzian Approaches to Researching Student Experience in Higher Education

Mona Sakr
TL;DR: In this article, the authors explore student experience in higher education from a Deleuzian perspective and introduce the concepts of becoming, assemblage and affect in relation to student experience.

A new scale of social desirability independent of psychopathology.

TL;DR: It seems clear that the items in the Edwards Social Desirability Scale would, of necessity, have extreme social desirability scale positions or, in other words, be statistically deviant.

Validity of Psychological Assessment: Validation of Inferences from Persons' Responses and Performances as Scientific Inquiry into Score Meaning.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose a unified concept of construct validity, which integrates considerations of content, criteria, and consequences into a construct framework for the empirical testing of rational hypotheses about score meaning and theoretically relevant relationships.

The adequacy of response rates to online and paper surveys: what can be done?

TL;DR: Suggestions for improving the effectiveness of evaluation strategy are to seek to obtain the highest response rates possible to all surveys; to take account of probable effects of survey design and methods on the feedback obtained when interpreting that feedback; and to enhance this action by making use of data derived from multiple methods of gathering feedback.

Validity of psychological assessment: validation of inferences from persons' responses and performances as scientific inquiry into score meaning

TL;DR: In this article, six distinguishable aspects of construct validity are highlighted as a means of addressing central issues implicit in the notion of validity as a unified concept, namely, content, substantive, structural, generalizability, external, and consequential aspects.
