Blanket/first wall challenges and required R&D on the pathway to DEMO

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors summarized the top technical issues and elucidates the primary challenges in developing the blanket/first wall and identified the key R&D needs in non-fusion and fusion facilities on the path to DEMO.
Journal ArticleDOI

European DEMO design strategy and consequences for materials

TL;DR: The DEMO design options that are being considered in Europe for the current conceptual design studies as part of the Roadmap to Fusion Electricity Horizon 2020 are described.

Developing structural, high-heat flux and plasma facing materials for a near-term DEMO fusion power plant: The EU assessment

TL;DR: The findings of the EU 'Materials Assessment Group' (MAG), within the 2012 EU Fusion Roadmap exercise, are discussed in this paper, where the authors analyse the technical consequences for the materials required and the development, testing and modelling programmes, using: a systems engineering approach, considering reactor operational cycles, efficient maintenance and inspection requirements, and interaction with functional materials/coolants.

Power requirement for accessing the H-mode in ITER

TL;DR: In this article, a revised scaling law that describes the threshold power required to obtain an L-mode to H-mode transition is presented, and the influence of these effects on the accessibility of the Hmode regime in ITER plasmas is discussed.

Impurity seeding for tokamak power exhaust: from present devices via ITER to DEMO

TL;DR: In this article, a double radiative feedback system has been implemented in ASDEX upgrade (AUG) to investigate the effect of divertor and main chamber radiation on the power flux through the separatrix normalized by the major radius.
Journal ArticleDOI

An integrated model for materials in a fusion power plant: transmutation, gas production, and helium embrittlement under neutron irradiation

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors integrated several different computational techniques to produce a comprehensive picture of the response of materials to neutron irradiation, enabling the assessment of structural integrity of components in a fusion power plant.

Power plant conceptual studies in Europe

TL;DR: The European Power Plant Conceptual Study (PPCS) as mentioned in this paper has been a study of conceptual designs of five commercial fusion power plants and the main emphasis was on system integration, focusing on five power plant models which are illustrative of a wider spectrum of possibilities.
