Population genetic structure of the perlemoen Haliotis midae in South Africa: evidence of range expansion and founder events

TLDR
It is concluded that populations of H. midae on either side of Cape Agulhas represent 2 independent reproductive stocks, and the area of transition between the stocks coincides with oceanographic features of the region.
Abstract
Genetic diversity in Haliotis midae, a highly valued and heavily exploited marine gastropod, was assessed using 3 marker types across samples from the species' range in South Africa. Variation was compared at 7 allozyme loci, 2 regions of mitochondrial DNA and 3 microsatellite loci. We conclude that populations of H. midae on either side of Cape Agulhas represent 2 independent reproductive stocks. The area of transition between the stocks coincides with oceanographic features of the region. Evidence from all 3 types of genetic marker indicates an isolated introduction event to the east of Cape Agulhas, and subsequent range expansion in an easterly direction. The disparity between allozyme data and the other 2 forms is seen as further evidence for the presence of balanc- ing selection at allozyme loci.

Detection of molecular signatures of selection at microsatellite loci in the South African abalone (Haliotis midae) using a population genomic approach

TL;DR: Various candidate loci under selection showed significant inter-chromosomal linkage disequilibrium, suggesting possible gene-networks underling adaptive phenotypes, whilst several loci had significant hits to known genes when performing BLAST searches to NCBI's non-redundant databases, whilst others are known to be derived from expressed sequences even though homology to a known gene could not be established.

Life in a rock pool: Radiation and population genetics of myxozoan parasites in hosts inhabiting restricted spaces.

TL;DR: While fish host specificity had little impact on parasite population structure, the habitat preference of the alternate invertebrate host as well as tidal water exchange may be additional crucial variables affecting the dispersal and associated population structure of C. cottoidii.

Molecular approaches uncover cryptic diversity in intertidal Ligia isopods (Crustacea, Isopoda, Ligiidae) across the southern Africa coastline

TL;DR: The presence of cryptic lineages within Ligia species in the region that suggest the need for taxonomic reevaluation of these isopod species in southern Africa are reported.

Population genetic structure and demographical history of South African abalone, Haliotis midae, in a conservation context

TL;DR: This study reported the first microsatellite and Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) markers developed specifically for Haliotis midae, which gave evidence for subtle differentiation between West and East coast populations that correlates with a hydrogeographic barrier in the vicinity of Cape Agulhas.

Broad-scale genetic patterns of New Zealand abalone, Haliotis iris, across a distribution spanning 13° latitude and major oceanic water masses.

TL;DR: Low, but significant, levels of genetic differentiation are found in the population genetic structure of the New Zealand black-foot abalone by genotyping nine microsatellite loci in 485 pāua from 27 locations distributed across mainland New Zealand and the Chatham Islands.

Estimating F-statistics for the analysis of population structure.

TL;DR: The purpose of this discussion is to offer some unity to various estimation formulae and to point out that correlations of genes in structured populations, with which F-statistics are concerned, are expressed very conveniently with a set of parameters treated by Cockerham (1 969, 1973).

TL;DR: Recent developments of statistical methods in molecular phylogenetics are reviewed and it is shown that the mathematical foundations of these methods are not well established, but computer simulations and empirical data indicate that currently used methods produce reasonably good phylogenetic trees when a sufficiently large number of nucleotides or amino acids are used.

Genetic distance between populations

TL;DR: If enough data are available, genetic distance between any pair of organisms can be measured in terms of D, and this measure is applicable to any kind of organism without regard to ploidy or mating scheme.
