Recent changes in the epidemiology of head and neck cancer

TLDR
The presence or absence of human papillomavirus in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck is a new parameter for prediction of long-term outcome of cancer of the oral cavity and of the oropharynx.
Abstract
Purpose of reviewTo review the most recent epidemiological studies on head and neck cancer and changes in knowledge about risk factors. Prognoses and improvement for head and neck cancers diagnosed in Europe in early 2000s : the EUROCARE-5 population-based study

TL;DR: This study shows survival progresses during the study period, however, slightly more than half of patients were diagnosed with regional or metastatic disease at diagnosis, which is crucial to reduce the European gap to further improve H&N cancers outcome.

- 01 Aug 2017 -
TL;DR: The estimates of the burden of rare cancers in Europe, their time trends in incidence and survival, and information about centralisation of treatments in seven European countries are updated to help improve case management and survival.

International trends in head and neck cancer incidence rates: Differences by country, sex and anatomic site

TL;DR: Oropharyngeal cancer rates increased among both men and women in a number of countries where tobacco use has declined, perhaps due to the emerging importance of human papillomavirus infection, whereas they declined in some Asian countries.

Cigarette, Cigar, and Pipe Smoking and the Risk of Head and Neck Cancers: Pooled Analysis in the International Head and Neck Cancer Epidemiology Consortium

Annah Wyss, +46 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that cigar and pipe smoking are independently associated with increased risk of head and neck cancers.

Case-control study of human papillomavirus and oropharyngeal cancer.

TL;DR: Oropharyngeal cancer was significantly associated with oral HPV type 16 (HPV-16) infection, and the degree of association increased with the number of vaginal-sex and oral-sex partners, among subjects with or without the established risk factors of tobacco and alcohol use.

Incidence Trends for Human Papillomavirus–Related and –Unrelated Oral Squamous Cell Carcinomas in the United States

TL;DR: The proportion of OSCCs that are potentially HPV-related increased in the United States from 1973 to 2004, perhaps as a result of changing sexual behaviors.
