TLDR
Dietary use of sitostanol ester margarine normalizes LDL cholesterol in about one third of women with previous myocardial infarction, especially in those with high baseline absorption and low synthesis of cholesterol, and in combination with statins reduces the needed drug dose.
Abstract
Background Reduction of serum cholesterol decreases mortality in primary and especially in secondary prevention. We investigated how effectively postmenopausal women with a previous myocardial infa...

Effects of plant stanol esters supplied in low-fat yoghurt on serum lipids and lipoproteins, non-cholesterol sterols and fat soluble antioxidant concentrations

TL;DR: It is concluded that low-fat yoghurt enriched with plant stanol esters lowers within 1 week LDL cholesterol to the same extent as oil-based products.

Stanol/Sterol Ester–Containing Foods and Blood Cholesterol Levels A Statement for Healthcare Professionals From the Nutrition Committee of the Council on Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Metabolism of the American Heart Association

TL;DR: A new class of margarines and other fat-derived products containing plant-derived sterols that are intended for use to lower blood cholesterol levels have been introduced into the food supply and are being marketed as adjuncts to low-saturated-fat and low-cholesterol diets.

Cholesterol reduction by different plant stanol mixtures and with variable fat intake

TL;DR: It is concluded that varying the campestanol to sitostanol ratio from 1:13 to 1:2 in margarine and in butter similarly decreased cholesterol absorption, LDL cholesterol, and the LDL/HDL cholesterol ratio such that the serum lipids became less atherogenic.

The Cholesterol-Lowering Action of Plant Stanol Esters

TL;DR: Plant stanol esters appear to be a helpful dietary adjunct to a prudent diet to lower cholesterol.
Journal ArticleDOI

A comparison of the LDL-cholesterol lowering efficacy of plant stanols and plant sterols over a continuous dose range: Results of a meta-analysis of randomized, placebo-controlled trials☆☆☆

TL;DR: Intakes of plant stanols in excess of the recommended 2g/day dose are associated with additional and dose-dependent reductions in LDL-CH, possibly resulting in further reductions in the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD).

Prevention of coronary heart disease with pravastatin in men with hypercholesterolemia. West of Scotland Coronary Prevention Study Group

TL;DR: Treatment with pravastatin significantly reduced the incidence of myocardial infarction and death from cardiovascular causes without adversely affecting the risk of death from noncardiovascular causes in men with moderate hypercholesterolemia and no history of my Cardiac Infarction.

Antibodies to glutamic acid decarboxylase as predictors of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus before clinical onset of disease.

TL;DR: Anti-GAD is a valuable early predictive marker and is associated with a very high risk for development of IDDM, and was measured in prediabetic sera from 151 women aged 20-39 years with newly diagnosed diabetes mellitus who had been identified through a nationwide diabetes register.
