TLDR
Dietary use of sitostanol ester margarine normalizes LDL cholesterol in about one third of women with previous myocardial infarction, especially in those with high baseline absorption and low synthesis of cholesterol, and in combination with statins reduces the needed drug dose.Abstract:
Background Reduction of serum cholesterol decreases mortality in primary and especially in secondary prevention. We investigated how effectively postmenopausal women with a previous myocardial infa...read more

Beyond blood lipids: phytosterols, statins and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid therapy for hyperlipidemia
TL;DR: The health benefits of phytosterols and omega-3 fatty acids, alone or in combination with statins, for the treatment/management of hyperlipidemia are reviewed, with particular emphasis on the mechanisms involved.
Journal ArticleDOI
Role of dietary supplements in lowering low-density lipoprotein cholesterol: A review
TL;DR: The evidence in support of dietary supplements and their LDL-C-lowering effects is reviewed, and supplements that, after initial excitement about their purported effect, were not found to lower HDL-C significantly are reviewed.

Decrease in plasma low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, cholesteryl ester transfer protein, and oxidized low-density lipoprotein by plant stanol ester-containing spread:: A randomized, placebo-controlled trial
TL;DR: Plant stanol ester-containing spread is efficacious in reducing plasma LDL-C, apoB, CETP, and Ox-LDL and that 2 g/d plant stanol is adequate for Japanese people is concluded.

TL;DR: Yoghurt, low-fat hard cheese and low-Fat fresh cheese enriched with a plant sterol mixture reduced serum cholesterol in hypercholesterolaemic subjects and no adverse effects were noted in the dietary control of hypercholesterololaemia.

Effects of low-fat stanol ester enriched margarines on concentrations of serum carotenoids in subjects with elevated serum cholesterol concentrations.
TL;DR: Low-fat stanol ester margarines appeared to have little effect on serum concentrations of α-, β- or α + β-carotene, or lycopene, and no significant changes were found in serum Lycopene or lyCopene/total cholesterol ratio in both experimental groups.
