Abstract
A deformation measurement system based on particle image velocimetry (PIV) and close-range photogrammetry has been developed for use in geotechnical testing. In this paper, the theory underlying this system is described, and the performance is validated. Digital photography is used to capture images of planar soil deformation. Using PIV, the movement of a fine mesh of soil patches is measured to a high precision. Since PIV operates on the image texture, intrusive target markers need not be installed in the observed soil. The resulting displacement vectors are converted from image space to object space using a photogrammetric transformation. A series of validation experiments are reported. These demonstrate that the precision, accuracy and resolution of the system are an order of magnitude higher than previous image-based deformation methods, and are comparable to local instrumentation used in element testing. This performance is achieved concurrent with an order of magnitude increase in the number of meas...

Fracture mode analysis and related surface deformation during dyke intrusion: Results from 2D experimental modelling

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of dyke propagation mode on surface deformation through 2D laboratory models was discussed, which suggests that dykes propagate as viscous indenters, rather than linear elastic fracturing.

Crack initiation in clay observed in beam bending

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the stress-strain criteria for cracking in clays by performing four-point bending tests on consolidated kaolin clay beams, and they showed that the threshold tensile strain to cracking in kaolin is low.

Laboratory Modelling of Volcano Plumbing Systems: A Review

TL;DR: In this article, the authors review the numerous experimental studies dedicated to unravelling the physics and dynamics of various parts of a volcanic plumbing system and provide a step-by-step explanation of how to apply dimensional analysis to laboratory models in order to identify fundamental physical laws that govern the modelled processes in dimensionless (i.e., scale independent) form.

Past, Present, and Future of Transparent Soils

TL;DR: Transparent soils have evolved in the past two decades as a useful tool for the physical modeling of soil-structure interaction mechanisms, saturated-unsaturated hydraulic behavior, and thermal processes in soils as discussed by the authors.
