Abstract
A deformation measurement system based on particle image velocimetry (PIV) and close-range photogrammetry has been developed for use in geotechnical testing. In this paper, the theory underlying this system is described, and the performance is validated. Digital photography is used to capture images of planar soil deformation. Using PIV, the movement of a fine mesh of soil patches is measured to a high precision. Since PIV operates on the image texture, intrusive target markers need not be installed in the observed soil. The resulting displacement vectors are converted from image space to object space using a photogrammetric transformation. A series of validation experiments are reported. These demonstrate that the precision, accuracy and resolution of the system are an order of magnitude higher than previous image-based deformation methods, and are comparable to local instrumentation used in element testing. This performance is achieved concurrent with an order of magnitude increase in the number of meas...

Isolating shallow foundations from seismic loading

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used the hysteric behavior of soil to isolate a shallow foundation from the underlying soil during an earthquake and compared the results with results when no special foundation layout was implemented and the impact of the proposed isolation methods is discussed.

Accommodation of compression and lateral extension in a continental crust: Analogical modeling of the Central Atlas (eastern Algeria, Tunisia) and Pelagian sea

TL;DR: In this article, analog modeling experiments of shortening and/or orthogonal extension applied to an upper-crust consisting of sand lying on weighted silicon are presented. And they highlight the role of processes at the scale of the lithosphere such as the formation of a crustal root below the Atlassic wedge and opposite vertical motions between Atlas and Pelagian areas as a consequence of delamination.

Novel Experimental Technique for Visualizing and Analyzing Robot- Soil Interactions

TL;DR: The Shear Interface Imaging Analysis Tool as discussed by the authors enables analysis of robot-soil interactions in richer detail than possible before, and can do so even for high frequency changes in motion (several Hz).

Collapses of underground cavities and soil-structure interactions: influences of the position of the structure relative to the cavity

TL;DR: In this article, Caudron et al. developed an original small-scale physical model to take the soil-structure interaction into account, based on the use of the frictional Schneebeli material (assembly of small diameter rods) and modified version including cohesion in order to reproduce a cohesive layer above a cavity.

Effects of solid fraction of saturated granular flows on overflow and landing mechanisms of rigid barriers

TL;DR: In this article , the authors used a 5m-long flume to model the impact of flows with different solid fraction νs on a rigid barrier, and the barrier height was varied to obtain barrier Froude numbers Frb (ratio of flow inertia to potential energy related to barrier height).
