Structural properties of plasma-sprayed zirconia-based electrolytes
TLDR
In this article, the structure and the microstructure of zirconia-yttria electrolytes were investigated by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy.Abstract:
Zirconia-based electrolytes, stabilized either with yttrium oxide or calcium oxide, were prepared in 100 to 200 μm thick layers by plasma spraying and densified by high-temperature vacuum sintering. The structure and the microstructure were investigated by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The results are compared with the data we obtained on the powders used for plasma spraying and on single crystals. In the zirconia-yttria system, dense and fully stabilized zirconia films with structural properties similar to the corresponding single crystals were obtained. On the other hand, cracks and deformations were observed on calcia-stabilized films. This phenomenon is explained by the dramatic increase of monoclinic phase content due to the preferential evaporation of calcium oxide which occurs during high-temperature vacuum sintering.read more

Thermal plasma spraying for SOFCs: Applications, potential advantages, and challenges
Rob Hui,Zhenwei Wang,Olivera Kesler,Olivera Kesler,Lars Rose,Lars Rose,Jasna Jankovic,Sing Yick,Radenka Maric,Dave Ghosh +9 more
TL;DR: In this paper, thermal plasma spray (PS) processing for nanopowder production and cell fabrication of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) is reviewed. But the application of PS processing to produce SOFCs faces some challenges, such as insufficient porosity of the electrodes, the difficulty of obtaining a thin (<10μm) and dense electrolyte layer.

TL;DR: In this paper, lattice parameter and density data were compiled for Y2O3-Stabilized ZrO2, both from the literature and from experimental measurements, and the data were described very well over a wide range of composition by the model of Aleksandrov et al., which assumes Y substitution for Zr in the unit cell with compensating anion vacancies.
