TL;DR: It is thought that only one of these s-galactosidases, the particulate enzyme hydrolyzing mainly lactose ("true lactase") plays a physiological role in the intestinal absorption of lactose, while the other, the soluble s- GalACTosidase, might be compared to the lysosomal s-GalactOSidase found in many other tissues.
