The effects of electrode material, charge density and stimulation duration on the safety of high-frequency stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus in rats.

TLDR
The data demonstrate the advantage of Pt/Ir over stainless-steel electrodes when used in short-term HFS and indicate that HFS using Pt/iridium-electrodes pulsed with 3 microC/cm2/phase over 3 days did not produce any relevant tissue damage in the STN.

Cochlear Implants: System Design, Integration, and Evaluation

TL;DR: Issues beyond cochlear implants are discussed to address treatment options for the entire spectrum of hearing impairment as well as to use the co chlear implant as a model to design and evaluate other similar neural prostheses such as vestibular and retinal implants.
Journal ArticleDOI

Nanomaterials for Neural Interfaces

TL;DR: This review focuses on the application of nanomaterials for neural interfacing, covering a variety of specific applications of nanoengineered devices, including drug delivery, imaging, topographic patterning, electrode design, nanoscale transistors for high‐resolution neural interfaced, and photoactivated interfaces.
Journal ArticleDOI

Deep brain stimulation in neurological diseases and experimental models: from molecule to complex behavior.

TL;DR: Clinical data and experimental work in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo in the treatment of Parkinson's disease led to the actual knowledge of DBS mechanisms, from molecular to complex behavioral levels.
Journal ArticleDOI

Long-term, multisite, parallel, in-cell recording and stimulation by an array of extracellular microelectrodes.

TL;DR: A novel neuroelectronic interface consisting of an array of noninvasive gold-mushroom-shaped microelectrodes that practically provide intracellular recordings and stimulation of many individual neurons, while the electrodes maintain an extracellular position is reported.
Journal ArticleDOI

Extracellular stimulation of mammalian neurons through repetitive activation of Na+ channels by weak capacitive currents on a silicon chip

TL;DR: The results provide a basis for safe extracellular stimulation not only for cultured neurons on insulated semiconductor electrodes, but also more generally for metal electrodes in cell culture and brain tissue.

The Rat Brain in Stereotaxic Coordinates

TL;DR: This paper presents a meta-analyses of the determinants of earthquake-triggered landsliding in the Czech Republic over a period of 18 months in order to establish a probabilistic framework for estimating the intensity of the earthquake.

Deep-brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus or the pars interna of the globus pallidus in Parkinson's disease.

TL;DR: Bilateral stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus or pars interna of the globus pallidus is associated with significant improvement in motor function in patients with Parkinson's disease whose condition cannot be further improved with medical therapy.

Fluoro-Jade: a novel fluorochrome for the sensitive and reliable histochemical localization of neuronal degeneration.

TL;DR: Fluoro-Jade is a more sensitive and definitive marker of neuronal degeneration than hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) or Nissl type stains, while being comparably sensitive yet considerably simpler and more reliable than suppressed silver techniques.

Charge density and charge per phase as cofactors in neural injury induced by electrical stimulation

TL;DR: Results show that charge density (as measured at the surface of the stimulating electrode) and charge per phase interact in a synergistic manner to determine the threshold of stimulation-induced neural injury.
Journal ArticleDOI

A model of safe levels for electrical stimulation

TL;DR: It is proposed that limits on levels of electrical stimulation take into account the location of the electrode relative to the stimulated tissue; these limits can be computed algorithmically from the model.
