In this article, the development of a dry-coupled piezoelectric transducer system for the detection of corrosion in chemical plant pipework using cylindrical Lamb waves is described.Abstract:
The development of a dry-coupled piezoelectric transducer system for the detection of corrosion in chemical plant pipework using cylindrical Lamb waves is described. It is shown that the axisymmetricL(0,2) mode at a frequency of about 70 kHz is an attractive mode to use for longdistance propagation. The results show that a ring of piezoelectric length-expander elements can be used to excite theL(0,2) mode and to suppress all the nonaxisymmetric modes. Tests have been carried out both with the piezoelectric elements bonded to the pipe and fabricated into a simple transducer which was clamped against the pipe. The performance of the dry-coupled system was very similar to that of the bonded elements. In pulse echo tests, the noise floor obtained with the dry-coupled system was less than 1% of the amplitude of the propagatingL(0,2) mode. The drycoupled transducers provide a simple, light, readily detachable system for the long-range inspection of pipework.read more

Validation of a procedure for the evaluation of the performance of an installed structural health monitoring system
TL;DR: A methodology was tested and verified that uses finite element simulations to superimpose defect signals onto measurements collected from a defect-free structure, which allows for the minimum detectable defect size to be estimated for specific geometries and damage locations in a quick and efficient manner.

Statistical threshold determination method through noise map generation for two dimensional amplitude and time-of-flight mapping of guided waves
TL;DR: In this paper, a statistical threshold determination method through noise map generation was proposed to automatically process numerous guided waves having different propagation distances, where the probability density functions (PDFs) of Gamma distribution, Weibull distribution and exponential distribution were used to model the measured 2D noise map.
