The image processing handbook

John C. Russ
TLDR
In this paper, the acquisition and use of digital images in a wide variety of scientific fields is discussed. But the focus is on high dynamic range imaging in more than two dimensions.
Abstract
"This guide clearly explains the acquisition and use of digital images in a wide variety of scientific fields. This sixth edition features new sections on selecting a camera with resolution appropriate for use on light microscopes, on the ability of current cameras to capture raw images with high dynamic range, and on imaging in more than two dimensions. It discusses Dmax for X-ray images and combining images with different exposure settings to further extend the dynamic range. This edition also includes a new chapter on shape measurements, a review of new developments in image file searching, and a wide range of new examples and diagrams"

Evaluation of the effects of gyratory and field compaction on asphalt mix internal structure

TL;DR: In this article, the effect of gyratory and field compaction on the internal structure of asphalt mixtures was investigated in terms of the aggregate contact points, orientation and segregation by means of 2D image analysis.
Journal ArticleDOI

Particle Motion Tracking Utilizing a High-Resolution Digital CCD Camera

TL;DR: In this article, a unique system has been developed capable of investigating the interparticle interaction in a two-dimensional array of ideal particles using high-resolution digital charge coupled device (CCD) camera and semi-automatic image processing and analysis algorithms.
Journal ArticleDOI

Study of filamentous bacteria by image analysis and relation with settleability.

TL;DR: An automated procedure for the characterisation by image analysis of the morphology of activated sludge has been used to monitor the biomass in a pilot wastewater treatment plant during two runs inoculated with a different sludge and operated at two different temperatures.
Journal ArticleDOI

Wave optics simulation of atmospheric turbulence and reflective speckle effects in CO 2 lidar

TL;DR: A numerical simulation that models the propagation of a lidar beam and accounts for both reflective speckle and atmospheric turbulence effects is presented, which are qualitatively consistent with previous experimental observations of increasing rms noise with increasing turbulence level.
Journal ArticleDOI

A novel triangulation procedure for thinning hand-written text

TL;DR: A novel procedure for thinning binary text images by generating graphical representations of words within the image by decomposed into a set of contiguous triangles that generates a final polygon skeleton that is one pixel wide and fully connected.
