TLDR
In this paper, the acquisition and use of digital images in a wide variety of scientific fields is discussed. But the focus is on high dynamic range imaging in more than two dimensions.
Abstract
"This guide clearly explains the acquisition and use of digital images in a wide variety of scientific fields. This sixth edition features new sections on selecting a camera with resolution appropriate for use on light microscopes, on the ability of current cameras to capture raw images with high dynamic range, and on imaging in more than two dimensions. It discusses Dmax for X-ray images and combining images with different exposure settings to further extend the dynamic range. This edition also includes a new chapter on shape measurements, a review of new developments in image file searching, and a wide range of new examples and diagrams"

Method for quantitative analysis of glycosaminoglycan distribution in cultured natural and engineered cartilage.

TL;DR: A computer-based technique for quantitative analysis of safranin-O stained histological sections, using low magnification light microscopy images, identified a parameter to quantify the intensity of red color in the sections, which was proportional to the biochemically determined wet weight fraction of GAG in corresponding tissue samples.

Automated Sizing of Coarse-Grained Sediments: Image-Processing Procedures

TL;DR: It is shown that neighborhood-based operations are the most powerful, and a morphological bottom-hat transform with a double threshold is optimal, and the optimal procedure is that which gives consistently good results across sites with dissimilar sedimentary characteristics.

Multiple sclerosis: magnetization transfer MR imaging of white matter before lesion appearance on T2-weighted images.

TL;DR: The MT ratio reveals progressive focal abnormalities in MS that antedate by up to 2 years the appearance of lesions on T2-weighted MR images.

Remote Computer-Aided Breast Cancer Detection and Diagnosis System Based on Cytological Images

TL;DR: Experimental evidence shows that the proposed computer-aided detection and diagnosis system for breast cancer patients based on the Web service has very effective results even in the case of images with high degree of blood cells and noisy circles.

In situ atomic force microscopy study of hectorite and nontronite dissolution: Implications for phyllosilicate edge surface structures and dissolution mechanisms

TL;DR: In this paper, the dissolution behavior of two smectite minerals, hectorite (trioctahedral) and nontronite (dioctalite), was observed in situ, in acid solutions, using atomic force microscopy.
