TLDR
In this paper, the acquisition and use of digital images in a wide variety of scientific fields is discussed. But the focus is on high dynamic range imaging in more than two dimensions.
Abstract
"This guide clearly explains the acquisition and use of digital images in a wide variety of scientific fields. This sixth edition features new sections on selecting a camera with resolution appropriate for use on light microscopes, on the ability of current cameras to capture raw images with high dynamic range, and on imaging in more than two dimensions. It discusses Dmax for X-ray images and combining images with different exposure settings to further extend the dynamic range. This edition also includes a new chapter on shape measurements, a review of new developments in image file searching, and a wide range of new examples and diagrams"

Using fractal image analysis to characterize microstructure of low-fat stirred yoghurt manufactured with microparticulated whey protein

TL;DR: In this article, the microstructure of low-fat yoghurt with microparticulated whey proteins used as fat replacer was investigated using a technique for image analysis that combines an initial 2D-wavelet compression followed by fractal analysis and inspection of the fractal curves by principal components analysis.

Morphological multiscale decomposition of connected regions with emphasis on cell clusters

TL;DR: A technique that splits cell clumps into meaningful parts based on the analysis of the morphological-scale space generated by iterative erosion, which has the independence of cell shapes which are clumped, the consideration of holes or background intensities within objects and the robustness with regard to convergence.

Investigation of Aggregate Shape Effects on Hot Mix Performance Using an Image Analysis Approach

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used the University of Illinois Aggregate Image Analyzer (UIAIA) for validation and development of imaging based morphological indices, i.e., flat and elongated (F&E) ratio, angularity index (AI) and surface texture (ST) index, of the coarse aggregate used in the national NCAT Pavement Test Track rutting study and in typical asphalt mixes obtained from the pooled fund participating agencies.

Specimen preparation and image processing and analysis techniques for automated quantification of concrete microcracks and voids

TL;DR: In this paper, different specimen preparation techniques were developed for use in fluorescent and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of concrete; then techniques produce a sharp contrast between microcracks/voids and the body of concrete.

Topological and network analysis of lithium ion battery components: the importance of pore space connectivity for cell operation

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors demonstrate that the extent to which lithium ion concentration gradients are induced or smoothed by the separator structure is linked to pore space connectivity, a parameter that can be determined by topological or network-based analysis of separators.
