The image processing handbook

John C. Russ
TLDR
In this paper, the acquisition and use of digital images in a wide variety of scientific fields is discussed. But the focus is on high dynamic range imaging in more than two dimensions.
Abstract
"This guide clearly explains the acquisition and use of digital images in a wide variety of scientific fields. This sixth edition features new sections on selecting a camera with resolution appropriate for use on light microscopes, on the ability of current cameras to capture raw images with high dynamic range, and on imaging in more than two dimensions. It discusses Dmax for X-ray images and combining images with different exposure settings to further extend the dynamic range. This edition also includes a new chapter on shape measurements, a review of new developments in image file searching, and a wide range of new examples and diagrams"

DART: a software to analyse root system architecture and development from captured images

TL;DR: DART (Data Analysis of Root Tracings) is freeware based on human vision to identify roots, particularly across time-series and helps in studying RSA and in producing structured and flexible datasets of individual root growth parameters.
Journal ArticleDOI

A machine vision system for tool wear assessment

TL;DR: In this paper, the extent of the flank wear land has been determined using both textural and gradient operators; a texture operator has been implemented in the final system, which consists of a fibre-optic light source to illuminate the tool and a CCD camera (used in conjunction with a high resolution video zoom microscope) to capture the reflected pattern.

Textural analyses of sidescan sonar imagery from two mound provinces in the Porcupine Seabight

TL;DR: In this article, high-resolution OREtech sidescan sonar data were acquired over two provinces of the Porcupine Seabight (Northeast Atlantic) at a depth of 500-1200 m, associated with the growth of cold-water deep-sea coral species such as Lophelia pertusa (L.) or Madrepora oculata (L.).
Journal ArticleDOI

Origins and fate of fungi and bacteria in the gut of Lumbricus terrestris L. studied by image analysis

TL;DR: Fungus and bacteria ingested with decomposing leaves of Taraxacum officinale and with soil were quantified using image analysis tools to allow a quantification of the food sources in the fore-, mid-, and hindgut of the earthworms.

An image-analysis technique to measure grain-size variation in thin sections of soft clastic sediments

TL;DR: In this article, a simple and fast image-analysis technique was proposed to measure grain-size variation in thin sections of soft elastic sediments using optical and backscattered electron microscope photographs.
