TLDR
The African Middle and early Late Pleistocene hominid fossil record is fairly continuous and in it can be recognized a number of probably distinct species that provide plausible ancestors for H. sapiens, and suggests a gradual assembling of the package of modern human behaviors in Africa, and its later export to other regions of the Old World.

Technological successions in the Middle Stone Age sequence of Diepkloof Rock Shelter, Western Cape, South Africa

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the evolution of the southern African MSA and the main technological changes therein, particularly emphasizing the emergence, succession and disappearance of the Still Bay (SB) and Howiesons Poort (HP).

Lower Palaeolithic Core Technology and the Origins of the Levallois Method in North‐Western Europe

Mark J. White, +1 more
- 01 Aug 2003 -
TL;DR: The appearance of Levallois technology ca. 300,000-250,000 years ago (oxygen isotope stage 8) is commonly used to define the Lower-to-Middle Palaeolithic boundary in Europe (see Ronen 1982) and arguably represents the only major innovation in lithic practices during the entire Middle Pleistocene of that continent as discussed by the authors.

New radiometric ages for the Fauresmith industry from Kathu Pan, southern Africa: Implications for the Earlier to Middle Stone Age transition

TL;DR: McBrearty et al. as discussed by the authors presented a minimum OSL age of 464 −107 +140 ǫkyr for an in situ Fauresmith assemblage, and three OSL ages for overlying Middle and Later Stone Age strata, from the site of Kathu Pan 1 (Northern Cape Province, South Africa).
Journal ArticleDOI

Using genetic evidence to evaluate four palaeoanthropological hypotheses for the timing of Neanderthal and modern human origins.

TL;DR: The authors' mean date estimates are consistent with a process of genetic divergence within an ancestral population, commencing approximately 410-440 ka, and suggest that a reappraisal of key elements in the Pleistocene hominin fossil record may now be required.
Journal ArticleDOI

Hunting with Howiesons Poort segments: pilot experimental study and the functional interpretation of archaeological tools

TL;DR: In this paper, a set of pilot experiments designed to test the effectiveness of Howiesons Poort segments, the type fossils of the industry, hafted in four different configurations as tips for hunting weapons.

Age dating and the orbital theory of the ice ages: Development of a high-resolution 0 to 300,000-year chronostratigraphy

TL;DR: Using the concept of "orbital tuning", a continuous, high-resolution deep-sea chronostratigraphy has been developed spanning the last 300,000 yr as mentioned in this paper.

Mitochondrial DNA and human evolution

TL;DR: All these mitochondrial DMAs stem from one woman who is postulated to have lived about 200,000 years ago, probably in Africa, implying that each area was colonised repeatedly.
