TLDR
The study findings will be instrumental to the development of public policies aiming at the prevention of obesity, atherosclerotic diseases and diabetes in an adolescent population.Abstract:
The Study of Cardiovascular Risk in Adolescents (Portuguese acronym, “ERICA”) is a multicenter, school-based country-wide cross-sectional study funded by the Brazilian Ministry of Health, which aims at estimating the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors, including those included in the definition of the metabolic syndrome, in a random sample of adolescents aged 12 to 17 years in Brazilian cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants. Approximately 85,000 students were assessed in public and private schools. Brazil is a continental country with a heterogeneous population of 190 million living in its five main geographic regions (North, Northeast, Midwest, South and Southeast). ERICA is a pioneering study that will assess the prevalence rates of cardiovascular risk factors in Brazilian adolescents using a sample with national and regional representativeness. This paper describes the rationale, design and procedures of ERICA.read more

ERICA: prevalence of dyslipidemia in Brazilian adolescents
José Rocha Faria Neto,Vivian Freitas Rezende Bento,Cristina Pellegrino Baena,Marcia Olandoski,Luis Gonzaga de Oliveira Gonçalves,Gabriela de Azevedo Abreu,Maria Cristina Caetano Kuschnir,Katia Vergetti Bloch +7 more
TL;DR: A significant proportion of Brazilian adolescents has alterations in their plasma lipids, especially in Brazil’s North and Northeast regions, and the high prevalence of low HDL cholesterol and hypertriglyceridemia must be analyzed in future studies, to support the creation of strategies for efficient interventions.

ERICA: smoking prevalence in Brazilian adolescents

TL;DR: Intending to reduce the prevalence of tobacco use among young people, especially the ones under socioeconomic vulnerability conditions, Brazil must consolidate and increase effective public health care measures.

Self-perceived body image, dissatisfaction with body weight and nutritional status of Brazilian adolescents: a nationwide study
Milene Moehlecke,Carina Andriatta Blume,Felipe Vogt Cureau,Christian Kieling,Beatriz D'Agord Schaan +4 more
TL;DR: Students with body image misperception and those dissatisfied with their weight were more likely to present a positive screening for common mental disorders and most of the sample rightly self-perceived their body image according to body mass index.

ERICA: use of screens and consumption of meals and snacks by Brazilian adolescents
Juliana Souza Oliveira,Laura Augusta Barufaldi,Gabriela de Azevedo Abreu,Vanessa Sá Leal,Gisela Soares Brunken,Sandra Mary Lima Vasconcelos,Marize Melo dos Santos,Katia Vergetti Bloch +7 more
TL;DR: Length of exposure to screens and consumption of meals and snacks almost always or always in front of screens are high among Brazilian adolescents and it is necessary to develop strategies aiming to reduce the length of screen use.

Response rate in the Study of Cardiovascular Risks in Adolescents – ERICA
Thiago Luiz Nogueira da Silva,Carlos Henrique Klein,Amanda de Moura Souza,Laura Augusta Barufaldi,Gabriela de Azevedo Abreu,Maria Cristina Caetano Kuschnir,Mauricio Teixeira Leite de Vasconcellos,Katia Vergetti Bloch +7 more
TL;DR: The response rate for non-invasive procedures was high and the response rate observed in public schools was lower than in the private ones, and that may reflect lower school frequency of registered students.

TL;DR: It is increasingly recognized that office measurements correlate poorly with blood pressure measured in other settings, and that they can be supplemented by self-measured readings taken with validated devices at home, which gives a better prediction of risk than office measurements and is useful for diagnosing white-coat hypertension.
