The study findings will be instrumental to the development of public policies aiming at the prevention of obesity, atherosclerotic diseases and diabetes in an adolescent population.Abstract:
The Study of Cardiovascular Risk in Adolescents (Portuguese acronym, “ERICA”) is a multicenter, school-based country-wide cross-sectional study funded by the Brazilian Ministry of Health, which aims at estimating the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors, including those included in the definition of the metabolic syndrome, in a random sample of adolescents aged 12 to 17 years in Brazilian cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants. Approximately 85,000 students were assessed in public and private schools. Brazil is a continental country with a heterogeneous population of 190 million living in its five main geographic regions (North, Northeast, Midwest, South and Southeast). ERICA is a pioneering study that will assess the prevalence rates of cardiovascular risk factors in Brazilian adolescents using a sample with national and regional representativeness. This paper describes the rationale, design and procedures of ERICA.read more

Common mental disorders in adolescents with and without type 1 diabetes: Reported occurrence from a countrywide survey.
TL;DR: Mental health symptoms seem to be more frequent than diagnosis of common mental disorders in adolescents with type 1 diabetes, which may also interfere in glycemic control, and highlight the need for appropriate mental health assessment in diabetes care in order to prevent gly glucose control deterioration.

TL;DR: No associations were found between this dietary pattern and AH and strategies to increase the intake of protective foods in adolescents must be investigated as well as the potential health benefits of the standard DASH diet for this age group over time.

Predictive Ability of Seven Anthropometric Indices for Cardiovascular Risk Markers and Metabolic Syndrome in Adolescents.

TL;DR: All the anthropometric indices had excellent predictive capacity for MetS, but limited accuracy for CRM, and among the evaluated indices, the use of cutoff point WHR ≥.55 to screening MetS in girls and boys is recommended because of its easy to measure and interpretation.

Assessing the relationship between smoking and abdominal obesity in a National Survey of Adolescents in Brazil.

TL;DR: A positive association between cigarette consumption and the prevalence of abdominal obesity, for both boys and girls, is suggested, using a nationwide representative sample of medium and large municipalities.

TL;DR: It is increasingly recognized that office measurements correlate poorly with blood pressure measured in other settings, and that they can be supplemented by self-measured readings taken with validated devices at home, which gives a better prediction of risk than office measurements and is useful for diagnosing white-coat hypertension.
