Postcolonial theories meet energy studies: “Institutional orientalism” as a barrier for renewable electricity trade in the Mediterranean region

TL;DR: In this article, the authors argue that the concepts and theories developed by postcolonialist scholars to criticize the cultural and epistemological relations of power between Europe and its former colonies can be expanded to analyse the failure of international energy cooperation projects such as the Mediterranean Solar Plan (MSP) and Desertec.

The River’s Light: Water Needs for Thermoelectric Power Generation in the Ebro River Basin, 1969–2015

TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyzed the evolution of the cooling water needs of thermal power plants in the Ebro River basin, the largest contributor to the Spanish electricity grid, over the period 1969-2015.

Opportunities for energy-water nexus management in the Middle East & North Africa

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors identify and motivate several opportunities for enhanced integrated operations management and planning in the energy-water nexus in multi-utilities in the MENA region, focusing on the electric power system, potable water distribution system, and wastewater distribution system.

Freshwater for Cooling Needs: A Long-Run Approach to the Nuclear Water Footprint in Spain

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors calculate a first approximation to the Spanish nuclear water footprint from 1969 to 2014, showing that while water consumed by Spanish nuclear power plants are around 3 m3 per capita/year, water withdrawals per capita /year are around 70 m3.
