Abstract
Current approaches to the development of natural language dialogue systems are discussed, and it is claimed that they do not sufficiently consider the unique qualities of man-machine interaction as distinct from general human discourse. It is concluded that empirical studies of this unique communication situation are required for the development of user-friendly interactive systems. One way of achieving this is through the use of so-called Wizard of Oz studies. The focus of the work described in the paper is on the practical execution of the studies and the methodological conclusions drawn on the basis of the authors' experience. While the focus is on natural language interfaces, the methods used and the conclusions drawn from the results obtained are of relevance also to other kinds of intelligent interfaces.

Data-Efficient Methods for Dialogue Systems.

TL;DR: A novel technique of predicting the dialogue length as the main ranking objective is employed and it is shown that this approach improves upon the ratings-based counterpart in terms of data efficiency while matching it in performance.

User involvement of patients with eating disorder – the design process from user needs to prototype

TL;DR: In this article, the design process from user needs to prototype is described for patient involvement of patients with eating disorder, and user involvement of eating disorder patients is discussed in the context of user involvement with eating disorders.

Effective Visualization of Tuberculosis Three-Drug Assays: A Design Study

TL;DR: A visualization tool to assist with analysis and processing of multidimensional data from the experimental drug assay procedure, which produces multivariate data that is difficult to analyse and onerous to process.

Intelligent Systems Program Comprehensive Examination Intelligent Interface

TL;DR: A number of known techniques in different areas of intelligent interfaces are reviewed and discussed how these techniques can be used to empower existing adaptive information filtering and retrieval systems so that they can match some unique powers of adaptive hypermedia.

User-Defined Gestures for Taking Self-portraits with Smartphone Based on Consistency

TL;DR: This paper is aimed at obtaining gestures for taking self-portraits from a distance, which should be consistent with user intuition, to enhance user experience.

The development of communication skills: modifications in the speech of young children as a function of listener

TL;DR: This paper found that the 4-year-old adjusted his speech with regard to the changing capacities of different-aged listeners, and the younger the 2-year old, the greater was the observed speech adjustment.

Cross-linguistic differences in parsing: Restrictions on the use of the Late Closure strategy in Spanish ☆

TL;DR: The results throw doubt on the suggestion that the Late Closure strategy is favoured (in English) mainly because it is efficient in information processing terms and suggest that different languages make use of parsing strategies in an essentially arbitrary way.
