Women treated for breast cancer have shown cognitive deficits with reduced capacity to focus and concentrate or to direct attention. This study examined the relationship between cognitive function prior to any treatment for breast cancer and individual factors including age, education, menopausal status, chronic health problems, and distress. Women newly diagnosed with breast cancer (N=184), ages 27–86 years, were assessed with standardized attention tests, self-reports of effectiveness in cognitive functioning, and measures of distress at about 18 days before surgery. Measured performance on the cognitive tests was not significantly correlated to self-reports of effectiveness in cognitive functioning. Age, education, presence of a chronic health problem, and menopausal status, but not distress, were associated with performance on the cognitive tests. Only age and education, however, were significant (p<0.001) predictors of overall performance on the cognitive tests, when controlling covariates. In contrast, symptom and mood distress significantly (p<0.001) predicted perceptions of effectiveness in cognitive functioning. Thus, different factors were associated with measured performance versus self-reports of cognitive functioning. Individual factors that predispose to lowered effectiveness in cognitive functioning prior to treatment in women newly diagnosed with breast cancer are discussed. This captures the dynamics of social transformation and agency in moving beyond theoretical and political canons of the status quo. The focus is on the nexus of people co-creating history and society while being interactively created by their own transformative agency. Revealing development and mind as agentive contributions to the 'world-in-the-making' from an activist stance guided by a sought-after future, this approach culminates in implications for research with transformative agendas and a pedagogy of daring. Goods remote in temporal, spatial, or social distance, or in likelihood, exert less control over our behavior than those more proximate. The decay of influence with distance, of perennial interest to behavioral economists, has had a renaissance in the study of delay discounting. By developing discount functions from marginal utilities, this article provides a framework that resolves several anomalies of intertemporal choice. Utilities are inferred to be power functions of monetary value, delay, and probability. Utility, not value, is discounted, with decisions made by adding the utility of a good to the disutility of a delay or contingency. The theory reduces to standard treatments, such as exponential, hyperbolic and hyperboloid, and exponential-power; naturally predicts magnitude effects and other asymmetries; is consistent with subadditivity, immediacy, and certainty effects; returns conjointly measured determinations of monetary utility and temporal distance functions; and is extensible to other dimensions of distance.

An Additive-Utility Model of Delay Discounting.

Drawing on previous models of anxiety, intermediate memory, the positive symptoms of schizophrenia, and goal-directed behaviour, a neuropsychological hypothesis is proposed for the generation of the contents of consciousness. It is suggested that these correspond to the outputs of a comparator that, on a moment-by-moment basis, compares the current state of the organism's perceptual world with a predicted state. An outline is given of the information-processing functions of the comparator system and of the neural systems which mediate them. The hypothesis appears to be able to account for a number of key features of the contents of consciousness. However, it is argued that neitherthis nor any existing comparable hypothesis is yet able to explain why the brain should generate conscious experience of any kind at all.
