Abstract: Frugal innovation has gained prominence based on its potential contribution to sustainable development and the new opportunities that it offers to low-income customers. This paper aims to analyse the strategic knowledge transfer practices implemented by an entrepreneurial university for fostering frugal innovations within an emerging economy.,This study adopted a case study methodological approach. The selected case was the University of Campinas (Unicamp), one of the leading universities in Brazil in terms of research quality and technology transfer. The study built upon 14 interviews with key informants and secondary sources of data (official and public documents).,The findings highlight the multidimensional dynamics of frugal innovations arising from university–industry relationships. Key dimensions considered include the internal capabilities of universities to foster frugal innovations and connect them to markets, the surrounding innovation ecosystems in which the university is embedded and the overarching institutional framework.,The analysis of strategic management practices for frugal innovation requires an evolutionary perspective, but the findings lacked sufficient longitudinal information for a formal evaluation. Also, as our empirical analysis is based on an in-depth case study of one university, further validation in other contexts would be necessary.,This study offers new insights regarding the effectiveness of university-business collaboration partnerships for developing frugal innovations in emerging economies. Policymakers should promote societal programs enhancing the active participation of all agents involved in the entrepreneurial and innovation ecosystem. University managers should understand the challenges and the opportunities behind the adoption of an inclusive and societal orientation.,By adopting frugal innovation practices, universities can enhance their contribution of meeting the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.,The literature on frugal innovation has emphasized the importance of networking between different types of firms, NGOs and governments, but the role of universities in frugal innovation remains mostly unexplored. This study addresses this gap by exploring how entrepreneurial universities participate in frugal innovations to meet societal challenges.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examine the role of institutional environments, how entrepreneurs operate and overcome the barriers to entrepreneurship, and reveal a model of determinants of frugal innovation and informal entrepreneurship ecosystem comprising of formal/informal rules, access to market and family.
Abstract: This article critically analyses how the entrepreneurial ecosystem (EE) and institutional environment influences the development of frugal innovation and informal entrepreneurship. There is a dearth of empirical research on African entrepreneurship ecosystems and complementors that produce innovations in the informal sector. We address this gap, by examining why and how informal businesses operate and evolve. Based on a qualitative approach, interviewing 20 business owners in Nigeria, two focus groups meeting with 5 and 7 business associations leaders respectively, we examine the role of institutional environments, how entrepreneurs operate and overcome the barriers to entrepreneurship. The results reveal a model of determinants of frugal innovation and informal entrepreneurship ecosystem comprising of formal/informal rules, access to market and family as important elements that act as a means to effective knowledge flows, networking, capital and resources sharing.

TL;DR: This study provides a more organized view of frugal innovation through the co-citation analysis and the qualitative analysis of the clusters, which were the basis for the parameters established and delimited the boundaries of FIS.
Abstract: In the past years, many contributions have been published addressing frugal innovation and other types of resource-constrained innovations in the management field. Throughout this paper frugal innovation is reported as a phenomenon, concept, research field and strategy, showing the different ways the literature refers to it and how scattered the concept is. However, based on the understanding, the authors decided to address frugal innovation as a kind of innovation strategy that helps companies to innovate in resource-constrained environments. Therefore, considering the increasing interest in the frugal innovation topic and adding the perspective of business strategy for resource-constrained conditions, the research question addressed in this paper is: what are the main features of the frugal innovation literature that unfold its current perspectives for business strategy? In this sense, the purpose of this study is to analyze the scientific production in frugal innovation through a literature mapping and review to better understand it, delimiting different perspectives and creating boundaries to other business strategies or approaches.,The authors performed a co-citation analysis using the Vosviewer software to notice how authors are arranged in clusters based on their understanding of the topic. Furthermore, the authors also performed a systematic literature review (SLR) analyzing the extant literature on frugal innovation based on the clusters found through the co-citation method. The final sample used in the study included 42 papers published between 2011 and 2019, using the Web of Science platform as a data source.,By means of SLR, the findings of this study provided a more organized view of frugal innovation through the co-citation analysis and the qualitative analysis of the clusters, which were the basis for the parameters established. After the conceptualization of frugal innovation strategy (FIS) and the delimitation of boundaries of FIS, the authors bring the reflections about the contribution to the literature and the practice (managers and society) by showing three assumptions to be tested and confirmed in future studies and a framework to guide companies in search of a FIS.,This study contributes to the discussion on frugal innovation moving a step forward to clarify the research field on this subject providing the main characteristics for researchers and practitioners. The paper has delimited the boundaries of FIS. The assumptions established in the discussion can become hypotheses for empirical studies. In addition, the authors explain why, what is, where and to whom the FIS can be developed and applied. Furthermore, the authors contribute by developing the FIS framework, with four strategic positions based on the boundaries of FIS organized by the complexity technological level. The strategic positions are frugal innovation orientation (FIO), FIO to value shared, FIO to market and FIS.

TL;DR: In this paper, the most important enablers of frugal innovation are world-class design, human aspect, marketing, support, knowledge, social aspect, prototyping, cultural aspect, environmental aspect, distinct brand creation, core functions focus, local R&D, cost-cutting business model and low-cost production.
Abstract: This paper aims to propose a framework for the dimensions of frugal innovation enablers in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).,A mixed research approach has been applied. First, by a comprehensive literature review, the most important factors influencing frugal innovation have been identified. Then, an interview has been conducted with 18 experts who were selected by snowball sampling method. In the next step, all identified variables have been modified in a questionnaire with 48 factors, which were distributed to 200 employees and managers of SMEs in the home appliance manufacturing industry of Isfahan province, who were selected by non-random sampling. Data has been analyzed using SPSS-25 software for exploratory factor analysis.,Findings indicated that the most important enablers of frugal innovation are world-class design, human aspect, marketing, support, knowledge, social aspect, prototyping, cultural aspect, environmental aspect, distinct brand creation, core functions focus, local R&D, cost-cutting business model and low-cost production.,The proposed framework provides an effective basis to managers and decision-makers in the field of frugal innovation to evaluate their capabilities in implementing frugal innovation, the results of which are helpful in developing a roadmap for achieving frugal innovation in SMEs and particularly in home appliance manufacturing companies.,The comprehensive framework of this study has not been applied, developed or studied in the literature. The proposed framework provides new insights for future studies on the subject of frugal innovation, e.g. investigating the influence of frugal innovation on frugal innovation performance.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors identify whether in times of crisis the development of frugal innovation in emerging markets depends on the bricolage capability and propose a set of managerial recommendations based on bricolages.
Abstract: PurposeThis research aims to answer the following question: Could bricolage become a capability for companies in emerging markets to develop frugal innovations in times of crisis? Therefore, in this paper the main aim is to identify whether in times of crisis the development of frugal innovation in emerging markets depends on the bricolage capability.Design/methodology/approachThe hypotheses were statistically tested using the structural equation modeling technique, with data collected through the survey method applied to 215 companies in Brazil.FindingsThe results allowed support for the hypothesis that bricolage capability has a positive impact on the development of frugal innovation. Therefore, a mediating test was verified, allowing confirmation that to develop frugal innovation in emerging markets, bricolage becomes a required capability for companies in times of crisis.Research limitations/implicationsThe limitation of this study lies in considering the effect of bricolage on frugal innovation only in the context of Brazil, while in developed countries this effect may be similar, as they also suffer from resource constraints caused by crises.Practical implicationsThis research provides insights to guide managers by highlighting bricolage as a key managerial capability for the development of frugal innovation. A set of managerial recommendations are provided based on bricolage skills.Originality/valueThe study has contributed to the literature on bricolage and frugal innovation by addressing bricolage as an antecedent of frugal innovation in emerging markets, especially when those markets are affected by resource scarcity.

TL;DR: It is proposed that the currently ongoing fourth renaissance of frugality needs to emerge as a megatrend that may shape a frugal "AGE" resulting in "affordable green excellence" as the dominant innovation paradigm.
Abstract: Objective of this paper is two-fold: first, we assess the likely impact of the corona crisis on the economic and societal choices of people, especially in relation to voluntary simplicity. Second, we contextualise the impact of those choices in the field of innovation management. Taking a normative-conceptual perspective we seek to understand in how far frugality, and inter alia, frugal innovations can play a role in better managing the after-effects of the corona crisis and what implications arise out of this for the relevant societal stakeholders. Frugality is likely to emerge as a mega-trend that may shape a frugal 'affordable green excellence' (AGE) as the dominant innovation paradigm. To realise this potential, however, it is necessary for frugal innovators and entrepreneurs to develop a more comprehensive and multidimensional understanding of affordability that is targeted at ensuring financial, societal, infrastructural and ecological affordability of frugal products, services, technologies and business models.

TL;DR: This approach takes advantage of machine learning and crowdsourcing to provide casual citizens with a frugal tool for plant disease detection and is designed and developed to facilitate casual citizens while gardening.
Abstract: To make smart cities more sustainable, and technologies and smart services accessible to a broader range of people, the frugal innovation paradigm comes in handy. In such a scenario, an interesting issue to investigate is gardening (both home and community gardening), considered a possibility toward sustainable development and environmental resilience. Following this line of thought, in this paper, we present our system, called FruGar (frugal gardening), designed and developed to facilitate casual citizens while gardening. In particular, our approach takes advantage of machine learning and crowdsourcing to provide casual citizens with a frugal tool for plant disease detection.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated frugal innovation and its reception in Brazil and analyzed six Brazilian company cases (three multinational corporations and three small and medium-sized enterprises) in terms of product development, product characteristics, and commercialization approaches, as well as compare these organisations with findings from Asian lead markets.
Abstract: In recent years, frugal innovation and its antecedents have gained significant attention in both theory and practice However, the vast majority of research focuses mainly on China and India and their bottom of the pyramid (BoP) customers Against this background, our research investigates frugal innovation and its reception in Brazil We analyse six Brazilian company cases (three multinational corporations and three small and medium-sized enterprises) in terms of frugal product development, product characteristics, and commercialisation approaches, as well as compare these organisations with findings from Asian lead markets Our results confirm that the principal dimensions of frugal innovation are cost-effectiveness and ease of use However, the findings also contradict the paradigm that frugal innovation must be essentially low-cost Based on these results, we propose a twofold approach to the cost criterion that differentiates between the company's and the customer's perspective and focuses on value-based pricing Further, distinctive product features, branding, and specific marketing activities are crucial for successful frugal innovation in Brazil This research extends the classification of frugal innovation in prior literature and suggests understanding frugal dimensions as a set of building blocks that can be flexibly applied to frugal product development depending on the context and regional requirements

TL;DR: In this article, the authors suggest that the debate on sustainable development and sustainable innovation could profit from the concept of frugal innovation, because both concepts acknowledge the limitations of a resource-constrained world.
Abstract: The paper suggests that the debate on sustainable development and sustainable innovation could profit from the concept of frugal innovation, because both concepts acknowledge the limitations of a resource-constrained world. The complex relationship between frugal innovation and sustainable innovation is explored in conceptual terms and results in criteria which denote potential overlaps between both concepts. Furthermore, the paper analyses world trade data of green technologies to demonstrate the increasing relevance of south-south and north-south trade and to derive implications for frugal innovation. Moreover, case studies of frugal and sustainable innovations are analysed in order to highlight their requirements and implications. Maybe the most important conclusion stemming from the considerations in this article is that the integration of frugal and sustainable innovation principles can breathe new life into the discussion about sustainable innovation and sustainable development in general.

TL;DR: The notion of frugal innovation has gained greater prominence in both the academic sphere and in political discussion but, so far, was mostly associated with emerging or developing economies.
Abstract: In recent years, the notion of frugal innovation has gained greater prominence in both the academic sphere and in political discussion but, so far, been mostly associated with emerging or developing economies. However, frugal innovation does not only describe particular products, or, more generally, products for a particular group of very low income customers. At least as importantly, it designates a way of innovating that focuses functionalities smartly and uses resources wisely. In that, it is very much in line with needs also, and increasingly, pertinent to European markets. Most importantly, it harbours the potential of reconciling viable business models with the much needed ambitions of addressing long-term societal as well as imminent social challenges. In doing so, a particular emphasis needs to be put on quality and sustainability rather than cheapest possible prices.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors explore the social dimension of frugal innovation by showing the potential of Frugal innovations to prompt social innovation and propose the concept of socially driven innovation.
Abstract: In the layperson's mind, the term frugal innovation evokes ideas of frugality and cheap solutions Experts share a broader understanding of frugal innovation as the ability to do more with less by increasing business and social value (Radjou and Prabhu, 2014) Emerging researches focus on its strategic, technological and organisational aspects However, the core of frugal innovation is its social dimension, yet this has generally been overlooked The aim of this paper is to explore the social dimension by showing the potential of frugal innovation to prompt social innovation Empirical material derived from four case studies of frugal innovation illustrates this strong social dimension Frugal innovation adds value by producing solutions cheaper than the alternatives, and allows non-consumers to become consumers, which itself is social innovation This paper presents a novel view of frugal innovation and social innovation as closely related The umbrella term socially driven innovation is suggested to incorporate both social and frugal innovation

TL;DR: This work uses game models to investigate the frugal product price and optimal degree of frugality decisions for the centralized, decentralized, retailer-led revenue-sharing contract and bargaining revenue- sharing contract scenarios, and shows that the centralized scenario is the optimal scenario where the platform retailer implements vertical integration strategy.
Abstract: E-retailers have recently paid close attention to frugal innovation in their supply chains. However, there are few studies on frugal innovation considering the e-retailer’s platform value raised by the increase in the platform user scale. Motivated by industrial practice, we consider a supply chain consisting of an e-retailer and a manufacturer in the context of frugal innovation, where the platform value of the retailer is characterized by Metcalfe’s law. We use game models to investigate the frugal product price and optimal degree of frugality decisions for the centralized, decentralized, retailer-led revenue-sharing contract and bargaining revenue-sharing contract scenarios. Our results indicate that the bargaining revenue-sharing contract can improve the frugal degree of the development-intensive frugal product (DIFP), while the frugal degree of the marginal cost-intensive frugal product (MIFP) cannot be improved by cooperation in the supply chain. We then compare the supply chain profit, the platform value of the retailer and the profit of the manufacturer in different scenarios. The results show that the centralized scenario is the optimal scenario where the platform retailer implements vertical integration strategy. Otherwise, establishing strategic partnership through the bargaining revenue-sharing contract is suboptimal for both the platform retailer and the manufacturer.

TL;DR: In this article, a conceptual framework for the analysis of interventions that foster frugal innovations through incubation is developed based on relevant theories and concepts in the field of innovation and related literature.
Abstract: Perceived positive impacts of frugal innovation for sustainable global development have triggered a variety of programmes to foster such innovation. To increase the impact of these programmes, it is important to understand how they function. In this paper, we develop a conceptual framework for the analysis of interventions that foster frugal innovations through incubation. Drawing on relevant theories and concepts in the field of innovation and related literature, the framework is based on two major categories of factors influencing the nature and outcome of frugal innovation incubation. The first category relates to the incubation process, the second to the innovation environment. The proposed framework is applied to the case study of VIA Water, a Dutch programme to foster water innovation in African cities. The framework and the case study presented in this paper demonstrate the complexity of a frugal innovation incubation process and thus the need to take a holistic approach when designing and/or analysing related interventions. We conclude that frugal innovation incubation programmes should consider that the innovation capabilities of potential frugal innovators tend to be weaker in developing than in developed countries. Therefore, incubation programmes should devise strategies that present frugal innovators possessing local knowledge and creative ideas with a realistic chance of competing.

TL;DR: In this article, a review of the literature describing frugal innovation is presented, where the authors compare the definitions of Frugal Innovations with some empirical propositions for frugality measuring in the companies.
Abstract: In the opinion of many researchers, frugal innovations are often connected with sustainable development. This statement is proved by literature analysis, where frugality and frugal innovations are presented as a determinant of sustainable development. However, in most of the cases the lack of empirical evidence of this situation can be noticed. The article includes a review of the literature describing frugal innovation. In the article, the definitions of frugal innovations are compared with some empirical propositions for frugality measuring in the companies. The aim of the paper is to describe the issue of frugal innovation, its definitions, manifestations and ways of measuring. The reason of conducting the study is a desire of verification how deep is the issue analysed in the literature. In order to achieve the aim of the paper, the following objectives have been set: (1) to discuss current definitions of frugal innovations; (2) to present the ways how frugal innovations can be manifested; (3) to describe current propositions of frugal innovation measures and to discuss if can they be used to measure frugal innovation efficiency in the companies. The analysis is based on literature review. First of all, there is presented the method of the study and detailed description of the research sampling process. Presentation of frugal innovation definitions is the second step of the study. The next step is to show the most common manifestations of frugal innovations. Considerations about these two elements are the causes of identifying the measures, which helps to assess the efficiency of frugal innovations. The study confirms that there is still a huge demand for deeper investigation of the issue, because the current literature does not provide the comprehensive understanding of it. Paper type: systematic literature review.
