TL;DR: A conformable ePTFE tube is made by a special process which insures that the tube is radially deformable up to a predetermined diameter without exceeding the plastic deformation limit of the tube as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: An intraluminal device such as a stent graft is formed of a conformable ePTFE tube and preferably a compressed self-expanding stent affixed to the tube. The conformable tube is made by a special process which insures that the tube is radially deformable up to a predetermined diameter without exceeding the plastic deformation limit of the tube. The stent has a relaxed diameter larger than the diameter of the expanded tube after insertion so that the tube is biased to a cylindrical shape. The process for making the tube involves progressively dilating a small diameter extruded tube until a desired diameter is achieved. The tube is then contracted on a small diameter mandrel by heating.

TL;DR: In this article, an elastic model is presented to study infinitesimal buckling of a double-walled carbon nanotube under axial compression and a simple formula is derived for the critical axial strain, which clearly indicates the role of the van der Waals forces between the inner and outer tubes characterized by two parameters.
Abstract: An elastic model is presented to study infinitesimal buckling of a double-walled carbon nanotube under axial compression. A simple formula is derived for the critical axial strain, which clearly indicates the role of the van der Waals forces between the inner and outer tubes characterized by two parameters. In particular, the analysis shows that inserting an inner tube into a single-walled nanotube does not increase the critical axial strain as compared to the single-walled nanotube under otherwise identical conditions, despite the fact that the total critical axial force of the double-walled nanotube could be increased due to an increase in the cross-sectional area.

TL;DR: In this paper, a position/movement sensitive effect-emitting strain gauge device includes a responsive portion such as an electrically conductive fabric, that can be stretched or relaxed and that changes an electrical property, such as resistance, when stretched and relaxed.
Abstract: A position/movement sensitive effect-emitting strain gauge device includes a responsive portion, such as an electrically conductive fabric, that can be stretched or relaxed and that changes an electrical property, such as resistance, when stretched or relaxed. The changeable electrical property of the responsive portion is detected by a regulating circuit, which sends a signal that depends on the detected electrical property to an effect-emitting component. The effect may be sound or light emission or the like. The shape of the responsive portion can be such as to allow it to fit over a body part, e.g., a tube shape would allow it to fit over an elbow. When worn, the electrical property of the responsive portion, and therefore the emitted effect, depends on the user's positions/movements.

TL;DR: In this paper, a tube of a size to be inserted into a surgical site, such as into an artery or heart valve annulus of a patient, is presented, which includes a suction opening laterally circumscribing at least a portion of the tube to allow fluid communication between the tissue of the patient at the surgical site and the bore.
Abstract: A method and device for suturing tissue, in which the device includes a tube of a size to be inserted into a surgical site, such as into an artery or heart valve annulus of a patient. The tube includes a suction opening laterally circumscribing at least a portion of the tube to allow fluid communication between the tissue of the patient at the surgical site and the bore of the tube. Also within the tube is a carriage for detachably holding at least one needle, in which the carriage is slidably movable within the bore near the suction opening of the tube. When the tube is properly positioned, a vacuum source is placed in fluid communication with the bore of the tube so that the tissue is drawn into the suction opening of the tube. The carriage is then slid within the bore so that the needles detachably held thereby traverse the tissue, thus quickly and efficiently placing sutures in the tissue at the surgical site.

TL;DR: Theoretical models of tube deformation are developed to predict the energy absorption as a function of tube wall strength, the ratio of tube thickness to tube diameter, and the density of the foam as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: Braided glass-fibre/epoxy circular tubes with polymer foam cores are loaded in tension and in compression, and the energy of deformation is measured. Theoretical models of tube deformation are developed, and are used to predict the energy absorption as a function of tube wall strength, the ratio of tube wall thickness to tube diameter, and the density of the foam. The energy per unit mass and energy per unit volume are optimised with respect to the relative density and geometry. It is found that foam-filled braided circular tubes exhibit promising energy absorbing characteristics, due to a combination of energy absorption by the polymeric foam core and by the glass/epoxy braided tube.

TL;DR: In this paper, a percutaneously accessing an implanted port using a pressure-responsive valve element is described. But this procedure requires the insertion of a penetrating element through intact skin to the port, and leaving the element in place for a time sufficient to create the tract.
Abstract: This invention is methods, and apparatus for percutaneously accessing an implanted port (10), and use an access tube (N) which is periodically introduced to the implanted port. TL;DR: In this paper, the authors measured the heat transfer and pressure drop of a newly proposed herringbone-type micro-fin tube and compared them with those of a helical micro- fin and a smooth tube.
Abstract: Condensation heat transfer and pressure drop of R410A and R22 in a newly proposed herringbone-type micro-fin tube are measured and compared to those of a helical micro-fin tube and a smooth tube. The heat transfer coefficient of the herringbone micro-fin tube is higher than that of the helical micro-fin tube in the high mass velocity region, while it has slightly lower value in the low mass velocity region. Pressure drop of the herringbone micro-fin tube is, however, higher than that of the helical micro-fin tube. Flow patterns of the herringbone micro-fin tube are observed and the heat transfer enhancement mechanism is discussed. The heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop of the helical micro-fin tube is predicted well with previously proposed correlations, while those of the herringbone-type micro-fin tube has higher value than the predicted values. Preliminary correlations for the pressure drop and the heat transfer coefficient are proposed for the herringbone micro-fin tube.

TL;DR: A catheter using multiple hollow fibers to carry a heating/cooling fluid employs fiber spreading features to improve heat transfer and help prevent clotting of body fluids within which the catheter is immersed as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: A catheter using multiple hollow fibers to carry a heating/cooling fluid employs fiber spreading features to improve heat transfer and help prevent clotting of body fluids within which the catheter is immersed. The catheter includes a length of outer tube surrounding an inner tube. The inner tube conveys fluids in one direction, and the passageway between inner and outer tubes conveys fluids in the opposite direction. The inner and outer tubes have proximal distal ends. The distal end is closed, but the proximal end is open to permit introduction of a heating or cooling fluid into the inner tube, and withdrawal of the fluid from the passageway between the inner and outer tubes. At the tubes' distal end resides a proximal fluid transfer housing coupled to multiple hollow heat exchange fibers. The distal ends of these fibers may be commonly connected to a distal fluid transfer housing and optional reservoir, which cooperatively return fluid to the passageway between inner and outer tubes. In another embodiment, each fiber includes both outflowing and return lumens, enabling the fibers' distal ends to freely move about. In another embodiment, each fiber proceeds outward from the proximal fluid transfer housing, and returns back to form a loop. In each different embodiment, the invention includes one or more actuating structures to spread the fibers. The actuating structure may include, for example, fiber shaping, a retractable spreading member, elastic bias built into the fibers, etc.

TL;DR: In this paper, a guide and filler tube is employed to infuse the correct quantity of thermally conductive medium into the uterus for cryoablation, which can be used to measure fluid volume and pressure to avoid breaching the uterine wall.
Abstract: A cryoprobe sheath has at least one positioning element that deploys and retracts to permit the insertion of the cryoprobe into a uterus without using ultrasound or fluoroscopy. A guide and filler tube may be employed to infuse the correct quantity of thermally conductive medium into the uterus for cryoablation. The guide and filler tube allows fluid volume and pressure to be measured to avoid inadvertently breaching the uterine wall.
