Journal ArticleDOI
Consistent response of bird populations to climate change on two continents
Philip A. Stephens,Lucy R. Mason,Rhys E. Green,Rhys E. Green,Richard D. Gregory,John R. Sauer,Jamie Alison,Ainars Aunins,Lluís Brotons,Stuart H. M. Butchart,Stuart H. M. Butchart,Tommaso Campedelli,Tomasz Chodkiewicz,Przemysław Chylarecki,Olivia Crowe,Jaanus Elts,Virginia Escandell,Ruud P. B. Foppen,Henning Heldbjerg,Sergi Herrando,Magne Husby,Frédéric Jiguet,Aleksi Lehikoinen,Åke Lindström,David G. Noble,Jean-Yves Paquet,Jiri Reif,Thomas Sattler,Tibor Szép,Norbert Teufelbauer,Sven Trautmann,Arco J. van Strien,Chris A. M. van Turnhout,Petr Vorisek,Stephen G. Willis +34 more
TL;DR: Despite many differences between the two regions, expectations about how a species might respond to climate change did predict actual responses, and species predicted to benefit from increasing temperatures, or their associated effects, tended to increase, whereas those predicted to be negatively affected declined.
Journal ArticleDOI
Harnessing the biodiversity value of Central and Eastern European farmland
Laura M. E. Sutcliffe,Péter Batáry,Urs G. Kormann,András Báldi,Lynn V. Dicks,Irina Herzon,David Kleijn,Piotr Tryjanowski,Iva Apostolova,Raphaël Arlettaz,Ainars Aunins,Stéphanie Aviron,L. Xavier Sans,Charlotte Seifert,Jaroslaw Stalenga,Johannes Timaeus,Peter Toeroek,Chris van Swaay,Eneli Viik,Teja Tscharntke +42 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that the continued underrepresentation of the low-intensity farmland in Central and Eastern Europe in the international literature and EU policy is impeding the development of sound, evidence-based conservation interventions.
Journal ArticleDOI
Connectedness and connectivity of the Natura 2000 network of protected areas across country borders in the European Union
TL;DR: In this article, the authors studied the spatial connectedness of Natura 2000 site boundaries and the functional connectivity of the network across the 34 terrestrial borders of the European Union and found that good connectivity is not always possible because of different habitats and/or different management on both sides of border.
Journal ArticleDOI
Long-term and large-scale multispecies dataset tracking population changes of common European breeding birds
Vojtěch Brlík,Vojtěch Brlík,Eva Šilarová,Jana Škorpilová,Hany Alonso,Marc Anton,Ainars Aunins,Zoltan Benko,Gilles Biver,Malte Busch,Tomasz Chodkiewicz,Przemysław Chylarecki,Dick Coombes,Elisabetta de Carli,Juan C. del Moral,Antoine Derouaux,Virginia Escandell,Daniel P. M. van Turnhout,Glenn Vermeersch,Zdeněk Vermouzek,Thomas Vikstrøm,Petr Voříšek,Anne Weiserbs,Alena Klvaňová +68 more
TL;DR: The Pan-European Common Bird Monitoring Scheme (PCMBS) as discussed by the authors is a large scale database of 170 species of birds collected by around fifteen thousand fieldworkers annually counting breeding birds using standardized protocols in 28 European countries.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of Natura 2000 on nontarget bird and butterfly species based on citizen science data
Vincent Pellissier,Vincent Pellissier,Reto Schmucki,Guy Pe'er,Ainars Aunins,Tom Brereton,Lluís Brotons,Lluís Brotons,Jofre Carnicer,Jofre Carnicer,Tomasz Chodkiewicz,Przemysław Chylarecki,J.C. del Moral,Virginia Escandell,Douglas Evans,Ruud P. B. Foppen,Alexander Harpke,Janne Heliölä,Sergi Herrando,Mikko Kuussaari,Elisabeth Kühn,Aleksi Lehikoinen,Åke Lindström,Charlotte M. Moshøj,Martin Musche,David G. Noble,Tom H. Oliver,Jiří Reif,D. Richard,David B. TL;DR: Although the N2000 network supports higher abundance of a large spectrum of species, the low number of specialist butterfly species showing a positive association stresses the need to implement management plan improving the quality of habitats of N2000 areas potentially harboring openland butterfly specialists.
