Staphylococcus aureus CC398: Host Adaptation and Emergence of Methicillin Resistance in Livestock
Lance B. Price,Marc Stegger,Henrik Hasman,Maliha Aziz,Jesper Larsen,Paal Skytt Andersen,Talima Pearson,Andrew E. Waters,Jeffrey T. Foster,James M. Schupp,John D. Gillece,Elizabeth M. Driebe,Cindy M. Liu,Cindy M. Liu,Burkhard Springer,Irena Zdovc,Antonio Battisti,Alessia Franco,Jacek Żmudzki,Stefan Schwarz,Patrick Butaye,Eric Jouy,Constança Pomba,M. Concepción Porrero,Raymond Ruimy,Tara C. Smith,D. Ashley Robinson,J. Scott Weese,Carmen Sofia Arriola,Fangyou Yu,Frédéric Laurent,Paul Keim,Paul Keim,Robert Skov,Frank Møller Aarestrup +34 more
TL;DR: The results strongly suggest that livestock-associated MRSA CC398 originated in humans as MSSA, which appears to have undergone a rapid radiation in conjunction with the jump from humans to livestock, where it subsequently acquired tetracycline and methicillin resistance.
Journal ArticleDOI
Clonal spread of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius in Europe and North America: an international multicentre study
Vincent Perreten,Kristina Kadlec,Stefan Schwarz,Ulrika Grönlund Andersson,Maria Finn,Christina Greko,Arshnee Moodley,Stephen A. Kania,Linda A. Frank,David A. Bemis,Alessia Franco,Manuela Iurescia,Antonio Battisti,Birgitta Duim,Jaap A. Wagenaar,Engeline van Duijkeren,J. Scott Weese,J. Ross Fitzgerald,Alexandra Rossano,Luca Guardabassi +19 more
TL;DR: Two major clonal MRSP lineages have disseminated in Europe and North America and regardless of their geographical or clonal origin, the isolates displayed resistance to the major classes of antibiotics used in veterinary medicine and thus infections caused by MRSP isolates represent a serious therapeutic challenge.
Journal ArticleDOI
Multiplex PCR for detection of plasmid-mediated colistin resistance determinants, mcr-1, mcr-2, mcr-3, mcr-4 and mcr-5 for surveillance purposes.
Ana Rita Rebelo,Valeria Bortolaia,Jette Kjeldgaard,Susanne Karlsmose Pedersen,Pimlapas Leekitcharoenphon,Inge M Hansen,Beatriz Guerra,Burkhard Malorny,Maria Borowiak,Jens A. Hammerl,Antonio Battisti,Alessia Franco,Patricia Alba,Agnès Perrin-Guyomard,Sophie A. Granier,Cristina De Frutos Escobar,Surbhi Malhotra-Kumar,Laura Villa,Alessandra Carattoli,Rene S. Hendriksen +19 more
TL;DR: The multiplex PCR protocol should be particularly interesting in settings or laboratories with limited resources for performing genetic analysis as it provides information on the mechanism of colistin resistance without requiring genome sequencing.
Journal ArticleDOI
Molecular Diagnostic Identification of Staphylococcus pseudintermedius
TL;DR: The first diagnostic test for the identification of Staphylococcus pseudintermedius involving a simple PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism approach is reported, which allows discrimination of S. pseud intermedius from the closely related members of the Staphlyococcus intermedius group and other important staphyl bacteria pathogens of humans and dogs.
Journal ArticleDOI
International collaborative study on the occurrence of plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance in Salmonella enterica and Escherichia coli isolated from animals, humans, food and the environment in 13 European countries
Kees Veldman,Lina Cavaco,Dik Mevius,Dik Mevius,Antonio Battisti,Alessia Franco,Nadine Botteldoorn,Mireille Bruneau,Agnès Perrin-Guyomard,Tomas Cerny,Cristina De Frutos Escobar,Beatriz Guerra,Andreas Schroeter,Montserrat Gutierrez,Katie L. Hopkins,Anna-Liisa Myllyniemi,Marianne Sunde,Dariusz Wasyl,Frank Møller Aarestrup +18 more
TL;DR: This study shows the occurrence and dissemination of PMQR genes in Salmonella and E. coli in Europe with a defined quinolone resistance phenotype, and reports the first detection of qnrD inSalmonella collected in Europe.
