General and abdominal adiposity and risk of death in Europe.
Tobias Pischon,Heiner Boeing,Kurt Hoffmann,M. Bergmann,Matthias B. Schulze,Kim Overvad,Y. T. van der Schouw,Elizabeth A Spencer,Karel G.M. Moons,Anne Tjønneland,Jytte Halkjær,Majken K. Jensen,Jakob Stegger,Françoise Clavel-Chapelon,M. C. Boutron-Ruault,V. Chajes,Jakob Linseisen,Rudolf Kaaks,Antonia Trichopoulou,Dimitrios Trichopoulos,Christina Bamia,Sabina Sieri,Domenico Palli,Rosario Tumino,Paolo Vineis,Paolo Vineis,Salvatore Panico,Petra H.M. Peeters,A. M. May,H. B. Bueno-de-Mesquita,F. J. B. van Duijnhoven,Göran Hallmans,Lars Weinehall,Jonas Manjer,Bo Hedblad,Eiliv Lund,Antonio Agudo,L. Arriola,Aurelio Barricarte,Carmen Navarro,Carlos Martinez,J. R. Quirós,Timothy J. Key,Sheila Bingham,Kay-Tee Khaw,Paolo Boffetta,Mazda Jenab,Pietro Ferrari,Elio Riboli +48 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that both general adiposity and abdominal adiposity are associated with the risk of death and support the use of waist circumference or waist-to-hip ratio in addition to BMI in assessing therisk of death.
Journal ArticleDOI
The NLRP3 inflammasome is released as a particulate danger signal that amplifies the inflammatory response.
Alberto Baroja-Mazo,Fátima Martín-Sánchez,Ana I. Gomez,Carlos Martinez,Joaquín Amores-Iniesta,Vincent Compan,Maria Barberà-Cremades,Jordi Yagüe,Estibaliz Ruiz-Ortiz,Jordi Anton,Segundo Buján,Isabelle Couillin,David Brough,Juan I. Aróstegui,Pablo Pelegrín +14 more
TL;DR: These findings support a model whereby the NLRP3 inflammasome, acting as an extracellular oligomeric complex, amplifies the inflammatory response.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cell Volume Regulation Modulates NLRP3 Inflammasome Activation
Vincent Compan,Alberto Baroja-Mazo,Gloria Lopez-Castejon,Ana I. Gomez,Carlos Martinez,Diego Angosto,María T. Montero,Antonio S. Herranz,Eulalia Bazán,Diana Reimers,Victoriano Mulero,Pablo Pelegrín +11 more
TL;DR: It is found that a decrease in extracellular osmolarity induced a K(+)-dependent conformational change of the preassembled NLRP3-inactive inflammasome during cell swelling, followed by activation of theNLRP3 inflammaome and caspase-1, which was controlled by transient receptor potential channels during RVD.
Journal ArticleDOI
DNA repair polymorphisms and cancer risk in non-smokers in a cohort study.
Giuseppe Matullo,Alison M. Dunning,Simonetta Guarrera,Caroline Baynes,Silvia Polidoro,Seymour Garte,Herman Autrup,Christian Malaveille,Marco Peluso,Luisa Airoldi,Fabrizio Veglia,Emmanuelle Gormally,Gerard Hoek,Michal Krzyzanowski,Kim Overvad,Ole Raaschou-Nielsen,F. Clavel-Chapelon,J. Linseisen,H. Boeing,Antonia Trichopoulou,Domenico Palli,Vittorio Krogh,R. Tumino,Salvatore Panico,H. B. Bueno-De-Mesquita,P. H. M. Peeters,Eiliv Lund,Guillem Pera,Carlos Martinez,Miren Dorronsoro,Aurelio Barricarte,M. J. Tormo,J. R. Quirós,Nicholas E. Day,Timothy J. Key,R. Saracci,Rudolph Kaaks,Elio Riboli,Paolo Vineis,Paolo Vineis +39 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that the XPD/ERCC1-GAT haplotype may modulate leukaemia and possibly other cancer risks and that the combined effects of polymorphisms within these DNA repair genes, smoking and other risk factors may help to clarify the influence of genetic variation in the carcinogenic process.
Journal ArticleDOI
Use of dietary supplements in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition calibration study
Guri Skeie,Tonje Braaten,Anette Hjartåker,M.A.H. Lentjes,Pilar Amiano,Paula Jakszyn,Valeria Pala,A. Palanca,E.M. Niekerk,Hans Verhagen,K. Avloniti,Theodora Psaltopoulou,M. Niravong,Mathilde Touvier,Katharina Nimptsch,J. Haubrock,L. Walker,E. A. Spencer,N. Roswall,A. Olsen,Peter Wallström,Staffan Nilsson,Corinne Casagrande,G. Deharveng,Veronica Hellstrom,M. C. Boutron-Ruault,Anne Tjønneland,A. M. Joensen,Françoise Clavel-Chapelon,Antonia Trichopoulou,Carlos Martinez,L. Rodriguez,Graziella Frasca,Carlotta Sacerdote,Petra H.M. Peeters,Jakob Linseisen,Anja Schienkiewitz,Ailsa A Welch,Jonas Manjer,P. Ferrari,Elio Riboli,Sheila Bingham,Dagrun Engeset,Eiliv Lund,Nadia Slimani +44 more
TL;DR: There are wide variations in supplement use in Europe, which may affect individual and population nutrient intakes, and underline the need to monitor consumption of dietary supplements in Europe.
