Journal ArticleDOI
Neuronal nicotinic receptors modulate synaptic function in the hippocampus and are sensitive to blockade by the convulsant strychnine and by the anti-Parkinson drug amantadine
Edson X. Albuquerque,Edna F. R. Pereira,Maria F.M Braga,Maria F.M Braga,Hiroaki Matsubayashi,Manickavasagom Alkondon +5 more
TL;DR: Experiments carried out in cultured hippocampal neurons demonstrated that the evoked GABA release can also be reduced by activation of these receptors, and showed that the convulsant strychnine is a competitive antagonist of alpha7 nAChRs and a non-competitive antagonists of alpha4beta2 nA ChRs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Low Concentrations of Pyridostigmine Prevent Soman-Induced Inhibition of GABAergic Transmission in the Central Nervous System: Involvement of Muscarinic Receptors
Mariton D. Santos,Edna F. R. Pereira,Yasco Aracava,Newton G. Castro,William P. Fawcett,William R. Randall,Edson X. Albuquerque +6 more
TL;DR: Pyridostigmine bromide, acting via m3 receptors, can effectively counteract effects arising from the interactions of soman with m2 receptors in the brain.
Journal ArticleDOI
Magnetic resonance imaging reveals that galantamine prevents structural brain damage induced by an acute exposure of guinea pigs to soman.
Rao P. Gullapalli,Yasco Aracava,Jiachen Zhuo,Edward Helal Neto,Jiazheng Wang,George Makris,Istvan Merchenthaler,Edna F. R. Pereira,Edson X. Albuquerque +8 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that galantamine can effectively prevent the structural brain damage induced by an acute exposure to soman, and the effectiveness of antidotes against OP toxicity in humans.
Journal Article
The pharmacology of batrachotoxin. V. A comparative study of membrane properties and the effect of batrachotoxin on sartorius muscles of the frogs Phyllobates aurotaenia and Rana pipiens.
TL;DR: Membrane properties and the effects of batrachotoxin (BTX) and tetrodotoxin were studied on sartorius muscles of Rana pipiens and of Phyllobates aurotaenia, the frog which produces BTX.
Journal ArticleDOI
