Neostigmine-induced alterations at the mammalian neuromuscular junction. II. Ultrastructure.
TL;DR: The postsynaptic degenerative changes caused by neostigmine treatment observed in nondenervated animals appear to result primarily from greatly increased synaptic activity and not primarily from a direct neostIGmine reaction with the pre- or post Synaptic membranes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nicotinic receptor subtypes in rat hippocampal slices are differentially sensitive to desensitization and early in vivo functional up-regulation by nicotine and to block by bupropion.
TL;DR: The results suggest that in vivo-nicotine-induced nAChR up-regulation observed in neurons of intact brain tissue is a physiologically relevant phenomenon and that early up- regulation of type III and type II nA ChRs could be an important biological signal in nicotine addiction.
Journal ArticleDOI
Electrophysiological and biochemical studies on enhancement of desensitization by phenothiazine neuroleptics
TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of phenothiazines chlorpromazine, prochlorperazine, and trifluoperazine on the acetylcholine receptor-ionic channel complex of frog and rat skeletal muscle and of Torpedo californica were investigated.
Journal ArticleDOI
Activation, inactivation, and desensitization of acetylcholine receptor channel complex detected by binding of perhydrohistrionicotoxin
Mohyee E. Eldefrawi,Robert S. Aronstam,Nabil M. Bakry,Amira T. Eldefrawi,Edson X. Albuquerque +4 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that H( 12)-HTX binds to closed and open ionic channels, with a preference for the latter conformation, and that the conformational changes associated with activation or desensitization of the receptor can be monitored by studying binding of H(12)- HTX to the ionic channel sites.
Journal ArticleDOI
NMDA and AMPA Receptors Contribute to the Nicotinic Cholinergic Excitation of CA1 Interneurons in the Rat Hippocampus
TL;DR: In the hippocampus, glutamatergic inputs to pyramidal neurons and interneurons are modulated by alpha7* and alpha3beta4* nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), respectively, present in glutamatorgic neurons.
