Genomic Epidemiology Reconstructs the Introduction and Spread of Zika Virus in Central America and Mexico
Julien Thézé,Tony Li,Louis du Plessis,Jerome Bouquet,Moritz U. G. Kraemer,Moritz U. G. Kraemer,Sneha Somasekar,Guixia Yu,Mariateresa de Cesare,Angel Balmaseda,Guillermina Kuan,Eva Harris,Chieh-Hsi Wu,M. Azim Ansari,Rory Bowden,Nuno R. Faria,Shigeo Yagi,Sharon Messenger,Trevor Brooks,Mars Stone,Evan M. Bloch,Michael P. Busch,José Esteban Muñoz-Medina,César González-Bonilla,Steven M. Wolinsky,Susana López,Carlos F. Arias,David Bonsall,Charles Y. Chiu,Oliver G. Pybus +29 more
TL;DR: Multiple lines of evidence indicate biannual peaks of ZIKV transmission in the region, likely driven by varying local environmental conditions for mosquito vectors and herd immunity and challenges arbovirus surveillance and disease control measures.
Book ChapterDOI
Molecular biology of flaviviruses.
TL;DR: It is shown that DENV undergoes canonical cap-dependent translation initiation as well as a non-canonical mechanism when cap- dependent translation is suppressed, and an RNA hairpin structure in the capsid coding region (cHP) influences start codon selection and viral replication of the flavivirus dengue virus.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mosquito Saliva Increases Endothelial Permeability in the Skin, Immune Cell Migration, and Dengue Pathogenesis during Antibody-Dependent Enhancement
Michael A. Schmid,Dustin R. Glasner,Sanjana Shah,Daniela Michlmayr,Laura D. Kramer,Eva Harris +5 more
TL;DR: It is shown that surgically removing the site of DENV transmission in the skin after 4 hours rescued mice from disease in the absence of SGE, but no longer prevented lethal antibody-enhanced disease when SGE was present, indicating that SGE accelerates the dynamics of dengue pathogenesis after virus transmission inThe skin and induces severe antibody- enhanced disease systemically.
Journal ArticleDOI
High Dengue Case Capture Rate in Four Years of a Cohort Study in Nicaragua Compared to National Surveillance Data
TL;DR: A country-specific expansion factor for dengue that allows for a more accurate estimate of incidence may aid governments and other institutions calculating disease burden, costs, resource needs for prevention and treatment, and the economic benefits of drug and vaccine development.
Journal ArticleDOI
Assessing the epidemiological effect of wolbachia for dengue control
Louis Lambrechts,Neil M. Ferguson,Eva Harris,Edward C. Holmes,Elizabeth A. McGraw,Scott Leslie O'Neill,Eng Eong Ooi,Scott A. Ritchie,Peter A. Ryan,Thomas W. Scott,Thomas W. Scott,Cameron P. Simmons,Cameron P. Simmons,Scott C. Weaver +13 more
TL;DR: Evidence that supports a practical approach for dengue reduction through field release of wolbachia-infected mosquitoes is reviewed and a pragmatic approach to acquiring preliminary evidence of efficacy through various complementary methods is presented.
