Obesity is associated with increased susceptibility to influenza A (H1N1pdm) but not H3N2 infection.
Hannah E Maier,Guillermina Kuan,Lionel Gresh,Roger Lopez,Nery Sanchez,Amy Schiller,Sergio R. Ojeda,Eva Harris,Angel Balmaseda,Aubree Gordon +9 more
TL;DR: It is found that among adults obesity is associated with susceptibility to H1N1pdm infection and with symptoms associated with H1n1PDm infection, but not with susceptibility with H3N2 infection or associated symptoms.
Journal ArticleDOI
Peptide arrays of three collections of human sera from patients infected with mosquito-borne viruses.
Maria del Pilar Martinez Viedma,Nurgun Kose,Leda Parham,Angel Balmaseda,Guillermina Kuan,Ivette Lorenzana,Eva Harris,James E. Crowe,Brett E. Pickett,Brett E. Pickett +9 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors reported the results of their peptide array data analysis, which revealed sets of peptides that have diagnostic potential for detecting past exposure to a subset of the tested human pathogens including Zika virus.
Journal ArticleDOI
Dengue virus NS1 protein conveys pro‐inflammatory signals by docking onto high‐density lipoproteins
Souheyla Benfrid,Kyu-Ho Park,Mariano Dellarole,James E. Voss,Carole Tamietti,Gérard Pehau-Arnaudet,Bertrand Raynal,Sébastien Brûlé,Patrick England,Xiaokang Zhang,Anastassia Mikhailova,Milena Hasan,Marie-Noëlle Ungeheuer,Stéphane Petres,Scott B. Biering,Eva Harris,Anavaj Sakuntabhai,Philippe Buchy,Veasna Duong,Philippe Dussart,Fasséli Coulibaly,François Bontems,Félix A. Rey,Marie Flamand +23 more
TL;DR: A functional high affinity complex formed between NS1 and human high‐density lipoproteins (HDL) triggers the production of pro‐inflammatory cytokines in human primary macrophages while NS1 or HDL alone do not.

An intranasal ASO therapeutic targeting SARS-CoV-2
Chi Zhu,Justin Lee,Jia Z. Woo,Lei Xu,Xammy Nguyenla,Lívia H. Yamashiro,Fei Ji,Scott B. Biering,Erik Van Dis,Federico Gonzalez,Douglas M. Fox,Arjun Rustagi,Benjamin A. Pinsky,Catherine A. Blish,Charles Y. Chiu,Eva Harris,Ruslan I. Sadreyev,Sarah A. Stanley,Sakari Kauppinen,Silvi Rouskin,Anders M. Näär +20 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a novel therapeutic strategy targeting the SARS-CoV-2 RNA using locked nucleic acid antisense oligonucleotides (LNA ASOs) was proposed.

Burden of SARS-CoV-2 and protection from symptomatic second infection in children
John Kubale,Angel Balmaseda,Aaron M. Frutos,Nery Sanchez,Miguel Plazaola,Sergio R. Ojeda,Saira Saborio,Roger Lopez,Carlos Barilla,Gerald Vasquez,Hanny Moreira,Anna M. Gajewski,Lora P. Campredon,Hannah E Maier,Mahboob Chowdhury,Cristhiam Cerpas,Eva Harris,Guillermina Kuan,Aubree Gordon +18 more
TL;DR: The Nicaraguan Pediatric Influenza Cohort as discussed by the authors , a prospective, community-based pediatric cohort study conducted from March 1, 2020 through October 15, 2021, was used to characterize the burden of COVID-19 and assess how protection from symptomatic re-infection among children may vary by age.
