The Hot and Energetic Universe: A White Paper presenting the science theme motivating the Athena+ mission

Kirpal Nandra, +239 more
TL;DR: The Advanced Telescope for High Energy Astrophysics (Athena+) mission as discussed by the authors provides the necessary performance (e.g., angular resolution, spectral resolution, survey grasp) to address these questions and revolutionize our understanding of the Hot and Energetic Universe.
Journal ArticleDOI

X-ray spectroscopy of the cluster of galaxies Abell 1795 with XMM-Newton

TL;DR: The initial results from XMM-Newton observations of the rich cluster of galaxies Abell 1795 are presented in this paper, where spatially-resolved X-ray spectra taken by the European Photon Imaging Cameras (EPIC) show a temperature drop at a radius of - 200 kpc from the cluster center, indicating that the ICM is cooling.
Journal ArticleDOI

X-ray reflection from cold matter in the nuclei of active galaxies

TL;DR: In this article, a composite spectrum from twelve Ginga observations of Seyfert-type active galactic nuclei has been used to model the hard X-ray power-law continuum in a slab (or perhaps a disk) of cold matter.
Journal ArticleDOI

EXOSAT observations of clusters of galaxies – I. The X-ray data

TL;DR: In this paper, X-ray observations of 45 clusters of galaxies made with the European Xray Observatory Satellite, EXOSAT, are presented, and the 1−20 keV spectra obtained constitute the largest homogeneous spectral sample presently available.
