Unhealthy landscapes: Policy recommendations on land use change and infectious disease emergence
Jonathan A. Patz,Peter Daszak,Gary M. Tabor,A. Alonso Aguirre,M. C. Pearl,Jonathan H. Epstein,Nathan D. Wolfe,A. M. Kilpatrick,Johannes Foufopoulos,David H. Molyneux,David J. Bradley +10 more
TL;DR: The group established a systems model approach and priority lists of infectious diseases affected by ecologic degradation, and recommended creating Centers of Excellence in Ecology and Health Research and Training, based at regional universities and/or research institutes with close links to the surrounding communities.
Journal ArticleDOI
A checklist for ecological management of landscapes for conservation
David B. Lindenmayer,Richard J. Hobbs,Rebecca Montague-Drake,Jason Alexandra,Andrew F. Bennett,Mark A. Burgman,Peter Cale,Aram J. K. Calhoun,Viki A. Cramer,Peter Cullen,Don A. Driscoll,Lenore Fahrig,Joern Fischer,Jerry F. Franklin,Yrjö Haila,Malcolm L. Hunter,Philip Gibbons,Sam Lake,Gary W. Luck,Chris MacGregor,Sue McIntyre,Ralph Charles Mac Nally,Adrian D. Manning,James R. Miller,H. A. Mooney,Reed F. Noss,Hugh P. Possingham,Denis A. Saunders,Fiona K. A. Schmiegelow,Michael L. Scott,Daniel Simberloff,Thomas D. Sisk,Gary M. Tabor,Brian Walker,John A. Wiens,John C. Z. Woinarski,Erika S. Zavaleta +36 more
TL;DR: Six major themes in the ecology and conservation of landscapes are assessed, including recognizing the importance of landscape mosaics, recognizing interactions between vegetation cover and vegetation configuration, and 13 important issues that need to be considered in developing approaches to landscape conservation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Climate change, wine, and conservation
Lee Hannah,Lee Hannah,Patrick R. Roehrdanz,Makihiko Ikegami,Anderson Shepard,M. Rebecca Shaw,Gary M. Tabor,Lu Zhi,Pablo A. Marquet,Robert J. Hijmans +9 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that, on a global scale, the impacts of climate change on viticultural suitability are substantial, leading to possible conservation conflicts in land use and freshwater ecosystems.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ecological dynamics of emerging bat virus spillover
Raina K. Plowright,Raina K. Plowright,Peggy Eby,Peter J. Hudson,Ina Smith,David A. Westcott,Wayne L. Bryden,Deborah Middleton,Peter A. Reid,Rosemary McFarlane,Gerardo Martin,Gary M. Tabor,Lee F. Skerratt,Dale L. Anderson,Gary Crameri,David Quammen,David Jordan,Paul Freeman,Lin-Fa Wang,Jonathan H. Epstein,Glenn A. Marsh,Nina Y. Kung,Hamish McCallum +22 more
TL;DR: Focusing on Hendra virus, but also addressing Nipah virus, Ebola virus, Marburg virus and coronaviruses, this work delineates this cross-species spillover dynamic from the within-host processes that drive virus excretion to land-use changes that increase interaction among species.
Journal ArticleDOI
Reproduction and nutritional stress are risk factors for Hendra virus infection in little red flying foxes (Pteropus scapulatus)
Raina K. Plowright,Hume Field,Craig Smith,Anja Divljan,Carol Palmer,Gary M. Tabor,Peter Daszak,Janet E Foley +7 more
TL;DR: Data showed that pregnant and lactating females had significantly higher risk of infection, which may explain previously observed temporal associations between HeV outbreaks and flying fox birthing periods and causal links between anthropogenic environmental change and HeV emergence are suggested.
