Infrared Spectroscopy of Comet 81P/Wild 2 Samples Returned by Stardust
Lindsay P. Keller,Saša Bajt,G. A. Baratta,Janet Borg,John P. Bradley,Donald E. Brownlee,Henner Busemann,John Robert Brucato,Mark J. Burchell,Luigi Colangeli,Louis Le Sergeant d'Hendecourt,Zahia Djouadi,G. Ferrini,George J. Flynn,Ian A. Franchi,Marc Fries,Monica M. Grady,Giles A. Graham,F. Grossemy,Anton T. Kearsley,Graciela Matrajt,Keiko Nakamura-Messenger,Vito Mennella,Larry R. Nittler,Maria Elisabetta Palumbo,Frank J. Stadermann,Peter Tsou,Alessandra Rotundi,Scott A. Sandford,Christopher J. Snead,Andrew Steele,Diane H. Wooden,Michael E. Zolensky +32 more
TL;DR: Infrared spectra of material captured from comet 81P/Wild 2 by the Stardust spacecraft reveal indigenous aliphatic hydrocarbons similar to those in interplanetary dust particles thought to be derived from comets, but with longer chain lengths than those observed in the diffuse interstellar medium.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comparing Wild 2 particles to chondrites and IDPs
Michael E. Zolensky,Keiko Nakamura-Messenger,Frans J. M. Rietmeijer,Hugues Leroux,Takashi Mikouchi,Kazumasa Ohsumi,Steven B. Simon,Lawrence Grossman,Thomas Stephan,M. K. Weisberg,Michael A. Velbel,Thomas J. Zega,Rhonda M. Stroud,Kazushige Tomeoka,Ichiro Ohnishi,Naotaka Tomioka,Tomoki Nakamura,Graciela Matrajt,David J. Joswiak,Donald E. Brownlee,Falko Langenhorst,Alexander N. Krot,Anton T. Kearsley,Hope A. Ishii,Giles A. Graham,Zu Rong Dai,Miaofang Chi,John P. Bradley,Kenji Hagiya,Matthieu Gounelle,Lindsay P. Keller,John Bridges +31 more
TL;DR: The authors compare the observed composition ranges of olivine, pyroxene, and Fe-Ni sulfides in Wild 2 grains with those from chondritic interplanetary dust particles (IDPs) and chondrite classes to explore whether these data suggest affinities to known hydrous materials in particular.
Journal ArticleDOI
A refractory inclusion returned by Stardust from comet 81P/Wild 2
Steven B. Simon,David J. Joswiak,Hope A. Ishii,John P. Bradley,Miaofang Chi,Miaofang Chi,Lawrence Grossman,Jérôme Aléon,Donald E. Brownlee,Stewart Fallon,Stewart Fallon,Ian D. Hutcheon,Graciela Matrajt,Kevin D. McKeegan +13 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a suite of particles from one impact track (Track 25) that are Ca-, Al-rich and FeO-free were studied and it was concluded that Inti is a refractory inclusion that formed in the inner solar nebula.
Journal ArticleDOI
FTIR and Raman analyses of the Tagish Lake meteorite: Relationship with the aliphatic hydrocarbons observed in the Diffuse Interstellar Medium
Graciela Matrajt,Janet Borg,Pierre-Ivan Raynal,Zahia Djouadi,Louis Le Sergeant d'Hendecourt,George J. Flynn,D. Deboffle +6 more
TL;DR: Using FTIR and Raman microspectroscopies, the authors analyzed 6 fragments of the Tagish Lake meteorite and showed that all the fragments belong to the carbonate-rich lithology, where an organic material including a highly disordered macromolecular carbonaceous component is found.
Journal ArticleDOI
Carbon investigation of two Stardust particles: A TEM, NanoSIMS, and XANES study
Graciela Matrajt,Motoo Ito,Sue Wirick,Scott Messenger,D. Brownlee,David J. Joswiak,George J. Flynn,Scott A. Sandford,Christopher J. Snead,Andrew J. Westphal +9 more
TL;DR: In this article, the results of a sy stematic search for cometary organics in 14 Stardust particles (particles from comet 81P/Wild 2, captured by NASAs Stardust mission) by TEM and multidisciplinary studies (XANES and NanoSIMS) of two of the organicbearing particles identified.
