Convergent transcriptional specializations in the brains of humans and song-learning birds
Andreas R. Pfenning,Erina Hara,Osceola Whitney,Miriam V. Rivas,Rui Wang,Petra L. Roulhac,Jason T. Howard,Morgan Wirthlin,Peter V. Lovell,Ganeshkumar Ganapathy,Jacquelyn Mouncastle,M. Arthur Moseley,J. Will Thompson,Erik J. Soderblom,Atsushi Iriki,Masaki Kato,M. Thomas P. Gilbert,Guojie Zhang,Trygve E. Bakken,Angie Bongaarts,Amy Bernard,Ed S. Lein,Claudio V. Mello,Alexander J. Hartemink,Erich D. Jarvis +24 more
TL;DR: The finding that convergent neural circuits for vocal learning are accompanied by convergent molecular changes of multiple genes in species separated by millions of years from a common ancestor indicates that brain circuits for complex traits may have limited ways in which they could have evolved from that ancestor.

Divergent sensory and immune gene evolution in sea turtles with contrasting demographic and life histories
Blair P. Bentley,Tomás Carrasco-Valenzuela,Elisa K. S. Ramos,Harvinder Pawar,Larissa Souza Arantes,Alana Alexander,Shreya M. Jarvis,Camila J. Mazzoni,Lisa M. Komoroske +46 more
TL;DR: Diversity and demographic histories starkly contrasted between species, indicating that leatherback turtles have had a low yet stable effective population size, exhibit extremely low diversity compared to other reptiles, and harbor a higher genetic load compared to green turtles, reinforcing concern over their persistence under future climate scenarios.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: In this article , the authors constructed 1:1 unambiguous alignments spanning high-identity segmental duplications across 102 human haplotypes and compared the pattern of SNVs between unique and duplicated regions.

An improved germline genome assembly for the sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus illuminates the evolution of germline-specific chromosomes
Nataliya Timoshevskaya,Kaan İ. Eşkut,Vladimir A. Timoshevskiy,Sofia M. C. Robb,Carson Holt,Jon E. Hess,Hugo J. Parker,Cindy F. Baker,Allison L. TL;DR: In this article , an improved assembly of the sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) genome was generated using recently standardized methods that increase the contiguity and accuracy of vertebrate genome assemblies.
Journal ArticleDOI
The swan genome and transcriptome, it is not all black and white

TL;DR: In this paper , the first chromosome-length black and mute swan genomes annotated with transcriptome data, all using long-read based pipelines generated for vertebrate species, were used to show that unlike other wild waterfowl, black swans lack an expanded immune gene repertoire, lack a key viral pattern recognition receptor in endothelial cells and mount a poorly controlled inflammatory response to highly pathogenic avian influenza.
