Journal ArticleDOI
Subnational distribution of average farm size and smallholder contributions to global food production
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a map of mean agricultural area, classified by the amount of land per farming household, at subnational resolutions across three key global regions using a novel integration of household microdata and agricultural landscape data.
Journal ArticleDOI
Use of agro-climatic zones to upscale simulated crop yield potential
Justin Van Wart,Lenny G.J. van Bussel,Joost Wolf,Rachel Licker,Patricio Grassini,Andrew Nelson,Hendrik Boogaard,James S. Gerber,Nathaniel D. Mueller,Lieven Claessens,Martin K. van Ittersum,Kenneth G. Cassman +11 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors compare global agro-climatic zonation schemes for suitability to up-scale location-specific estimates of Yp and Yw, which are the basis for estimating yield gaps at regional, national, and global scales.
Journal ArticleDOI
Innovation can accelerate the transition towards a sustainable food system
Mario Herrero,Philip K. Thornton,Daniel Mason-D'Croz,Jeda Palmer,Tim G. Benton,Benjamin Leon Bodirsky,Jessica R. Bogard,Andy Hall,Bernice Lee,Karine Nyborg,Prajal Pradhan,Graham D. Bonnett,Brett A. Vermeulen,Sonja J. Vermeulen,Joost Vervoort,Paul C. West +50 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors identify technologies, assess their readiness and propose eight action points that could accelerate the transition towards a more sustainable food system and argue that the speed of innovation could be significantly increased with the appropriate incentives, regulations and social licence.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nitrogen use in the global food system: past trends and future trajectories of agronomic performance, pollution, trade, and dietary demand
Luis Lassaletta,Luis Lassaletta,Gilles Billen,Josette Garnier,Lex Bouwman,Lex Bouwman,Eduardo Velázquez,Eduardo Velázquez,Nathaniel D. Mueller,James S. Gerber +9 more
TL;DR: In this paper, an integrated analysis of changes in human diets, N use efficiency (NUE) of cropping and livestock systems, N pollution and N in traded food and feed products for 12 world regions for the period 1960-2050 is presented.
Journal ArticleDOI
Optimal focusing by spatio-temporal inverse filter. I. Basic principles
TL;DR: This broadband inverse-focusing technique is compared in homogeneous media with the classical focusing achieved by simple geometrical considerations but also with time-reversal focusing and it is shown that, even in a simple medium, slight differences appear between these three focusing strategies.
