Infrared Spectroscopic Study of Stratum Corneum Model Membranes Prepared from Human Ceramides, Cholesterol, and Fatty Acids
G.S. Gooris,Joke A. Bouwstra +1 more
TL;DR: In infrared spectroscopic studies of hydrated mixtures prepared from cholesterol, human CER, and free fatty acids, it is concluded that in stratum corneum, fatty acids and CER participate in the orthorhombic lattice at 32 degrees C, the skin temperature.
Journal ArticleDOI
Safety aspects of non-ionic surfactant vesicles: a toxicity study related to the physicochemical characteristics of non-ionic surfactants.
H. E. J. Hofland,Joke A. Bouwstra,Jj. C. Verhoef,Graham Buckton,B. Z. Chowdry,Maria Ponec,Hans E. Junginger +6 more
TL;DR: Two different toxicity models were used to assess the relationship between the physicochemical properties of non‐ionic surfactant vesicles (NSVs), and the safety of these vesicle for topical drug administration, and it was observed that gel‐state vedicles produce less of an effect on the ciliary beat frequency than liquid state ves particles.
Journal ArticleDOI
Intercellular Skin Barrier Lipid Composition and Organization in Netherton Syndrome Patients
Jeroen van Smeden,M. Janssens,Walter A. Boiten,Vincent van Drongelen,Laetitia Furio,Laetitia Furio,Laetitia Furio,Rob J. Vreeken,Alain Hovnanian,Alain Hovnanian,Alain Hovnanian,Joke A. Bouwstra +11 more
TL;DR: The observed changes in lipid composition, lipid organization, and enzyme expression are likely to contribute to the barrier dysfunction in NTS.
Journal ArticleDOI
Altered expression of epidermal lipid bio-synthesis enzymes in atopic dermatitis skin is accompanied by changes in stratum corneum lipid composition.
Mogbekeloluwa O. Danso,Walter A. Boiten,Vincent van Drongelen,Kevin A Gmelig Meijling,Gert S. Gooris,Abdoel Waheb El Ghalbzouri,Samira Absalah,Rob J. Vreeken,Sanja Kezic,Jeroen van Smeden,Sjan Lavrijsen,Joke A. Bouwstra +11 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated whether the expression of CER and FFA biosynthesis enzymes are altered in atopic dermatitis (AD) skin compared with control skin and determine whether changes in enzyme expression can be related with changes in lipid composition.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cationic Liposomes Loaded with a Synthetic Long Peptide and Poly(I:C): a Defined Adjuvanted Vaccine for Induction of Antigen-Specific T Cell Cytotoxicity
TL;DR: Cationic liposomes loaded with SLP and poly(I:C) have potential as a powerful therapeutic cancer vaccine formulation and showed an at least 25 fold increase over the T cell frequency induced by the poly( I:C)-adjuvanted soluble SLP.
