Journal ArticleDOI
Plasma and mucosal HIV viral loads are associated with genital tract inflammation in HIV-infected women
Betsy C. Herold,Marla J. Keller,Qiuhu Shi,Donald R. Hoover,Colleen Carpenter,Ashley Huber,Urvi M. Parikh,Kathy Agnew,Howard Minkoff,Christine Colie,Marek Nowicki,Gypsyamber D'Souza,D. Heather Watts,D. Heather Watts,Kathryn Anastos +14 more
TL;DR: A cross-sectional comparison was conducted among women in the Women's Interagency HIV Study to explore the hypothesis that compared with HIV-uninfected participants, women with HIV, and, in particular, those with high plasma viral load have increased levels of mucosal and systemic inflammatory mediators and impaired mucosal endogenous antimicrobial activity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Trends in and correlates of CD4+ cell count at antiretroviral therapy initiation after changes in national ART guidelines in Rwanda.
Eugene Mutimura,Diane Addison,Kathryn Anastos,Donald R. Hoover,Jean Claude Dusingize,Ben Karenzie,Isabelle Izimukwiye,Leo Mutesa,Sabin Nsanzimana,Denis Nash +9 more
TL;DR: Marked improvements in the median CD4+ cell count at ART initiation and proportion initiating ART with advanced HIV disease were observed following the expansion of ART eligibility criteria in Rwanda, however, sex disparities in late treatment initiation persisted through 2011–2012, and appeared to be driven by later diagnosis and/or delayed linkage to care among men.
Journal ArticleDOI
Herpes zoster in women with and at risk for HIV: Data from the women's interagency HIV study
Marshall J. Glesby,Donald R. Hoover,Tianren Tan,Qiuhu Shi,Wei Gao,Audrey L. French,Toby Maurer,Mary Young,Jack DeHovitz,Jenny Ru,Kathryn Anastos +10 more
TL;DR: Lower CD4 cell count was more strongly associated with zoster incidence than were other clinical indicators, and even women with high CD4 counts are at greater risk of zoster than HIV-uninfected women.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cervical Precancer Risk in HIV-Infected Women Who Test Positive for Oncogenic Human Papillomavirus Despite a Normal Pap Test
Marla J. Keller,Robert D. Burk,L. Stewart Massad,Isam-Eldin Eltoum,Nancy A. Hessol,Philip E. Castle,Kathryn Anastos,Xianhong Xie,Howard Minkoff,Xiaonan Xue,Gypsyamber D'Souza,Lisa Flowers,Alexandra M. Levine,Christine Colie,Lisa Rahangdale,Margaret A. Fischl,Joel M. Palefsky,Howard D. Strickler +17 more
TL;DR: HIV-infected women with a normal Pap result who test HPV16 positive have high precancer risk (similar to those with LSIL), possibly warranting immediate colposcopy.
Journal ArticleDOI
Permissive and protective factors associated with presence, level, and longitudinal pattern of cervicovaginal HIV shedding
James Homans,Shawna Christensen,Tracey Stiller,Chia Hao Wang,Wendy J. Mack,Kathryn Anastos,Howard Minkoff,Mary Young,Ruth M. Greenblatt,Mardge H. Cohen,Howard D. Strickler,Roksana Karim,LaShonda Spencer,Eva Operskalski,Toinette Frederick,Andrea Kovacs +15 more
TL;DR: Although PVL correlates strongly with CV-VL, discordance is frequent and genital shedding is sporadic and not reliably predicted by associated factors, HAART, by reducing PVL, is the most reliable means of reducing cervicovaginal shedding.
