The channel catfish genome sequence provides insights into the evolution of scale formation in teleosts.
Zhanjiang Liu,Shikai Liu,Jun Yao,Lisui Bao,Jiaren Zhang,Yun Li,Chen Jiang,Luyang Sun,Ruijia Wang,Yu Zhang,Tao Zhou,Qifan Zeng,Qiang Fu,Sen Gao,Ning Li,Sergey Koren,Yanliang Jiang,Aleksey V. Zimin,Peng Xu,Adam M. Phillippy,Xin Geng,Lin Song,Fanyue Sun,Chao Li,Xiaozhu Wang,Ailu Chen,Yulin Jin,Zihao Yuan,Yujia Yang,Suxu Tan,Eric Peatman,Jianguo Lu,Zhenkui Qin,Rex A. Dunham,Zhaoxia Li,Tad S. Sonstegard,Jianbin Feng,Roy G. Danzmann,Steven Schroeder,Brian E. Scheffler,Mary V. Duke,Linda L. Ballard,Huseyin Kucuktas,Ludmilla Kaltenboeck,Haixia Liu,Jonathan W. Armbruster,Yangjie Xie,Mona L. Kirby,Yi Tian,Mary Elizabeth Flanagan,Weijie Mu,Geoffrey C. Waldbieser +51 more
TL;DR: A high-quality reference genome sequence of channel catfish is reported, providing evidence that lack of secretory calcium-binding phosphoproteins accounts for the evolutionary loss of scales in catfish and demonstrates the power of comparative subtraction of candidate genes for traits of structural significance.
Journal ArticleDOI
Metagenomic analysis of the turkey gut RNA virus community
TL;DR: This work utilized the Roche/454 Life Sciences GS-FLX platform to compile an RNA virus metagenome from turkey flocks experiencing enteric disease, and yielded numerous sequences homologous to viruses in the BLAST nr protein database, many of which have not been described in turkeys.
Journal ArticleDOI
Analysis of expressed sequence tags from Uromyces appendiculatus hyphae and haustoria and their comparison to sequences from other rust fungi.
David P. Puthoff,A. Neelam,Mindy L. Ehrenfried,Brian E. Scheffler,Linda L. Ballard,Q. Song,Kimberly B. Campbell,Bret Cooper,Mark L. Tucker +8 more
TL;DR: A small family of putatively secreted RTP1-like proteins was identified in U. appendiculatus and P. graminis, and summation of sequences of known cellular function suggested that haustoria at 5 dpi had fewer transcripts linked to protein synthesis in favor of energy metabolism and nutrient uptake.
Journal ArticleDOI
Naturally occurring high oleic acid cottonseed oil: identification and functional analysis of a mutant allele of Gossypium barbadense fatty acid desaturase-2.
Jay Shockey,Michael K. Dowd,Brian M. Mack,Matthew K. Gilbert,Brian E. Scheffler,Linda L. Ballard,James Frelichowski,Catherine B. Mason +7 more
TL;DR: The discovery of multiple exotic accessions of pima cotton that contain elevated seed oil oleate content is reported, and a mutant candidate fatty acid desaturase-2 (FAD2-1D) gene was identified.
Journal ArticleDOI
Colistin Resistance mcr-1-Gene-Bearing Escherichia coli Strain from the United States
Richard J. Meinersmann,Scott R. Ladely,Jodie R. Plumblee,M. Carolina Hall,Sheron A. Simpson,Linda L. Ballard,Brian E. Scheffler,Linda L. Genzlinger,Kimberly L. Cook +8 more
TL;DR: The completed genome sequence of an Escherichia coli strain isolated from swine in the United States that carried the mcr-1 gene on an IncI2-type plasmid is reported.
