The channel catfish genome sequence provides insights into the evolution of scale formation in teleosts.
Zhanjiang Liu,Shikai Liu,Jun Yao,Lisui Bao,Jiaren Zhang,Yun Li,Chen Jiang,Luyang Sun,Ruijia Wang,Yu Zhang,Tao Zhou,Qifan Zeng,Qiang Fu,Sen Gao,Ning Li,Sergey Koren,Yanliang Jiang,Aleksey V. Zimin,Peng Xu,Adam M. Phillippy,Xin Geng,Lin Song,Fanyue Sun,Chao Li,Xiaozhu Wang,Ailu Chen,Yulin Jin,Zihao Yuan,Yujia Yang,Suxu Tan,Eric Peatman,Jianguo Lu,Zhenkui Qin,Rex A. Dunham,Zhaoxia Li,Tad S. Sonstegard,Jianbin Feng,Roy G. Danzmann,Steven Schroeder,Brian E. Scheffler,Mary V. Duke,Linda L. Ballard,Huseyin Kucuktas,Ludmilla Kaltenboeck,Haixia Liu,Jonathan W. Armbruster,Yangjie Xie,Mona L. Kirby,Yi Tian,Mary Elizabeth Flanagan,Weijie Mu,Geoffrey C. Waldbieser +51 more
TL;DR: A high-quality reference genome sequence of channel catfish is reported, providing evidence that lack of secretory calcium-binding phosphoproteins accounts for the evolutionary loss of scales in catfish and demonstrates the power of comparative subtraction of candidate genes for traits of structural significance.
Journal ArticleDOI
Construction of a high-density, high-resolution genetic map and its integration with BAC-based physical map in channel catfish
Yun Li,Shikai Liu,Zhenkui Qin,Geoff Waldbieser,Ruijia Wang,Luyang Sun,Lisui Bao,Roy G. Danzmann,Rex A. Dunham,Zhanjiang Liu +9 more
TL;DR: The integrated map provides a valuable tool for validating and improving the catfish whole-genome assembly and facilitates fine-scale QTL mapping and positional cloning of genes responsible for economically important traits.
Journal ArticleDOI
Editing of the Luteinizing Hormone Gene to Sterilize Channel Catfish, Ictalurus punctatus , Using a Modified Zinc Finger Nuclease Technology with Electroporation
Zhenkui Qin,Zhenkui Qin,Yun Li,Yun Li,Baofeng Su,Baofeng Su,Qi Cheng,Zhi Ye,Dayan A. Perera,Dayan A. Perera,Michael Fobes,Mei Shang,Mei Shang,Rex A. Dunham +13 more
TL;DR: This is the first sterilization achieved using ZFN technology in an aquaculture species and the first successful gene editing of channel catfish, and is a step towards control of domestic, hybrid, exotic, invasive, and transgenic fishes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evolutionary transcriptomics of metazoan biphasic life cycle supports a single intercalation origin of metazoan larvae.
Jing Wang,Lingling Zhang,Shanshan Lian,Zhenkui Qin,Xuan Zhu,Xiaoting Dai,Zekun Huang,Caihuan Ke,Zunchun Zhou,Jiankai Wei,Pingping Liu,Naina Hu,Qifan Zeng,Bo Dong,Ying Dong,Dexu Kong,Zhifeng Zhang,Sinuo Liu,Yu Xia,Yangping Li,Liang Zhao,Qiang Xing,Xiaoting Huang,Xiaoli Hu,Zhenmin Bao,Shi Wang +25 more
TL;DR: The ontogenetic transcriptome profiling for Mollusca reveals that trochophore larvae exhibit rapid transcriptome evolution with extraordinary incorporation of novel genes (potentially contributing to adult shell evolution), and that cell signalling/communication genes are probably crucial for larval evolution.
Journal ArticleDOI
Interaction of diet and the masou salmon Δ5-desaturase transgene on Δ6-desaturase and stearoyl-CoA desaturase gene expression and N-3 fatty acid level in common carp (Cyprinus carpio)
Qi Cheng,Baofeng Su,Zhenkui Qin,Chia-Chen Weng,Fang Yin,Yangen Zhou,Michael Fobes,Dayan A. Perera,Dayan A. Perera,Mei Shang,Fabio Soller,Zhiyi Shi,Allen Davis,Rex A. Dunham +13 more
TL;DR: The genotype × diet interactions observed indicated that the potential of desaturase transgenesis cannot be realized without using a well-designed diet with the needed amount of substrates.
