Inter-individual differences in cytokine release in patients undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass

TL;DR: In vitro and in vivo cytokine responses and white blood cell counts of patients with high versus low cytokine secretion after a coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) procedure suggest close relationships between cytokine release in the postoperative period and inter‐individually varying patterns of cytokines release in patients undergoing CABG surgery with CPB.
Journal ArticleDOI

Zinc homeostasis and immunosenescence.

TL;DR: An impaired function of innate immune cells indicate a predominance of zinc deficiency in the elderly that may contribute to immunosenescence, and current findings about zinc deficiency and supplementation in elderly individuals are summarized.
Journal ArticleDOI

Stimulation of Human Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells by Zinc and Related Cations

TL;DR: It is shown that zinc addition in a serum- and lipopolysaccharide-free cell culture system leads to significantly enhanced levels of interleukin 1 beta and tumour necrosis factor alpha and to expression of the corresponding mRNA in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC).
