Journal ArticleDOI
The role of ecological theory in microbial ecology
James I. Prosser,Brendan J. M. Bohannan,Thomas P. Curtis,Richard J. Ellis,Mary K. Firestone,Robert P. Freckleton,Jessica L. Green,Laura E. Green,Ken Killham,Jack J. Lennon,A. Mark Osborn,Martin Solan,Christopher J. van der Gast,J. Peter W. Young +13 more
TL;DR: It is argued that the full potential of the ongoing revolution in microbial ecology will not be realized if research is not directed and driven by theory, and that the generality of established ecological theory must be tested using microbial systems.
Journal ArticleDOI
Extinction and Ecosystem Function in the Marine Benthos
Martin Solan,Bradley J. Cardinale,Amy L. Downing,Katharina A. M. Engelhardt,Jennifer L. Ruesink,Diane S. Srivastava +5 more
TL;DR: It is shown that species extinction is generally expected to reduce bioturbation, but the magnitude of reduction depends on how the functional traits of individual species covary with their risk of extinction.
Journal ArticleDOI
A review of approaches for classifying benthic habitats and evaluating habitat quality.
TL;DR: A broad range of sophistication/complication in terms of the methods applied in assessing and mapping benthic habitats was found, including the simplest index or metric involved some assessment of species richness, while the most complicated required utilizing multi-variate analysis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Linking biodiversity, ecosystem services, and human well-being: three challenges for designing research for sustainability
Elena M. Bennett,Wolfgang Cramer,Alpina Begossi,Georgina Cundill,Sandra Díaz,Benis N. Egoh,Ilse R. Geijzendorffer,Cornelia B. Krug,Sandra Lavorel,Elena Lazos,Louis Lebel,Berta Martín-López,Patrick Meyfroidt,Harold A. Mooney,Jeanne L. Nel,Unai Pascual,Karine Payet,Natalia Pérez Harguindeguy,Garry D. Peterson,Anne Hélène Prieur-Richard,Belinda Reyers,Peter Roebeling,Ralf Seppelt,Ralf Seppelt,Martin Solan,Petra Tschakert,Teja Tscharntke,Billie Turner,Peter H. Verburg,E.F. Viglizzo,Piran C. L. White,Guy Woodward +31 more
TL;DR: The ecoSERVICES project as discussed by the authors is a platform to foster global coordination of multidisciplinary sustainability science through the lens of ecosystem services, focusing on three key questions that will improve incorporation of ecosystem service research into decision-making for the sustainable use of natural resources to improve human well-being.
Journal ArticleDOI
Bright spots : seeds of a good Anthropocene
Elena M. Bennett,Martin Solan,Reinette Biggs,Reinette Biggs,Timon McPhearson,Albert V. Norström,Per Olsson,Laura Pereira,Laura Pereira,Garry D. Peterson,Ciara Raudsepp-Hearne,Frank Biermann,Stephen R. Carpenter,Erle C. Ellis,Hichert Tn,Victor Galaz,Myanna Lahsen,Manjana Milkoreit,Berta Martin López,Kimberly A. Nicholas,Rika Preiser,Gaia Vince,Joost Vervoort,Joost Vervoort,Jianchu Xu,Jianchu Xu +25 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present an approach to thinking about the future that builds on experiences drawn from a diversity of practices, worldviews, values, and regions that could accelerate the adoption of pathways to transformative change (change that goes beyond incremental improvements).
