TL;DR: A synopsis of the current understanding of the spatio-temporal complexity of this important climate mode and its influence on the Earth system is provided and a unifying framework that identifies the key factors for this complexity is proposed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Enhanced El Niño–Southern Oscillation Variability in Recent Decades
Pamela R. Grothe,Pamela R. Grothe,Kim M. Cobb,Giovanni Liguori,Emanuele Di Lorenzo,Antonietta Capotondi,Yanbin Lu,Hai Cheng,Hai Cheng,R. Lawrence Edwards,John Southon,Guaciara M. Santos,Daniel M. Deocampo,Jean Lynch-Stieglitz,Tianran Chen,Hussein R. Sayani,Diane M. Thompson,Jessica L. Conroy,Andrea L. Moore,Kayla Townsend,Melat Hagos,G. O'Connor,Lauren T. Toth +22 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors reconstruct the strength of ENSO variations over the last 7,000 years with a new ensemble of fossil coral oxygen isotope records from the Line Islands, located in the central equatorial Pacific.
Journal ArticleDOI
Climatic and biotic thresholds of coral-reef shutdown
Lauren T. Toth,Lauren T. Toth,Richard B. Aronson,Richard B. Aronson,Kim M. Cobb,Hai Cheng,Hai Cheng,R. Lawrence Edwards,Pamela R. Grothe,Hussein R. Sayani +9 more
TL;DR: In this article, a 6,750-year coral core from Pacific Panama identified the environmental conditions associated with abrupt reef shutdown and identified the conditions that led to coral die-off.
Journal ArticleDOI
Challenges in Building Coastal Digital Elevation Models
Barry W. Eakins,Pamela R. Grothe +1 more
TL;DR: This work identifies common challenges in building square-cell, coastal DEMs and presents some solutions, and best practices to help improve DEM accuracy and utility are identified.
Journal ArticleDOI
A comparison of U/Th and rapid-screen 14C dates from Line Island fossil corals
Pamela R. Grothe,Kim M. Cobb,Shari L. Bush,Hai Cheng,Guaciara M. Santos,John R. Southon,R. Lawrence Edwards,Daniel M. Deocampo,Hussein R. Sayani +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a rapid-screen 14C dating technique was used on shallow-water corals by comparing 44 rapid screen 14C dates to both high precision 14C and U/Th dates from mid- to late-Holocene fossil corals collected from the central tropical Pacific (2-4°N, 157-160°W).
