Suppressed Crystallization of Rod-Disc Molecule by Surface Anchoring Confinement

TL;DR: In this paper, the phase transition behaviors of the rod-disc molecule (RD12, where 12 is the number of carbon atoms in each alkyl chain linkage between the rod and the disc mesogens) were dramatically changed upon varying the thickness of liquid crystal cells and alternating their surface chemical and physical environments.

Monitoring defects on monolayer graphene using nematic liquid crystals

TL;DR: P polarized optical microscopy is reported to observe defect distributions in monolayer graphene and shows that point defects generated by prolonged UV irradiation time give rise to irregular LC alignment with disclination lines on the graphene surface and a large-size LC domain associated with graphene single domain eventually disappeared, indicating that defects associated with oxygen-containing functional groups cause to reduce the strong stacking interaction between graphene and LC molecules.
